POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay baseball team started a four-game CCAA road trip to Southern California to take on Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos scored four runs in the first inning en route to a 12-7 win over the Pioneers.
The pitching matchup was between the Pioneers' Tommy Scavone and the Broncos' Will Rudy. As previously mentioned, the Broncos scored four runs in the bottom of the first with all four coming on doubles to right field. The Pioneers would start their comeback in the top of the second as Ryan Maciel converted a fielders' choice to first that scored Luke Novitske. The Pioneers would tack on two more in the top of the third with one coming on a Jacob Klinovsky single through the right side that scored Essex Brown Jr. and the other coming on a Matthew O'Mahony sacrifice fly that drove in Manny Garcia. The Broncos would then post five unanswered runs to take a 9-3 lead into the eighth. In the top of the eighth, the Pioneers would explode for four runs with two coming on an O'Mahony single up the middle, driving in Klinovsky and Garcia and two on a Francisco Pedraza's team leading fifth home run of the season. The four-run outburst trimmed the Broncos' lead to 9-7. The Broncos scored three in the bottom of the eighth for the final tally.
Rudy got the win for the Broncos and Scavone got the loss for the Pioneers. Scavone allowed seven hits while striking out three in 5.0 innings of work. Garcia and Klinovsky both went 2-for-4. O'Mahony went 1-3 with three RBIs and one run scored.
The Pioneers (10-9, 3-6 CCAA) and Broncos (10-11, 5-7 CCAA) will continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader. The first game is slated for noon and the second game is slated for 3 p.m. from Scolinos Field.
