Pioneer Baseball Opens Doubleheader with 8-2 Victory over No. 19 Stanislaus State, Finale Postponed Until Sunday

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team opened the day by defeating No. 19 Stanislaus State, 8-2 in the opening game of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
 
The doubleheader finale was postponed due to lack of visibility with the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 12th inning. The teams continue the game on Sunday at noon just ahead on their series finale.
 
With the win, the Pioneers improve to 9-1 on the season with a 4-1 showing in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The series between the Pioneers and Warriors is currently tied 1-1.
 
East Bay found the bats that they lacked on Friday afternoon, racking up total 11 hits. A trio of Pioneers notched multi-hit performances in the victory. AJ Curtis finished with two hits, including a double, two RBI and a run scored. Robert Lujan notched two hits, with an RBI and a run and Adrian Padilla tallied two hits and scored a run.
 
All-CCAA pitcher Brian Martinez (W, 2-0) turned in a terrific performance on the mound for East Bay as he complied five strikeouts while facing 30 batters through 8.0 innings on the hill.
 
East Bay scored the bulk of their runs in the opening three innings of action and routinely used great defense to keep any chance of a Stanislaus State comeback at bay.
 
Kaleb Keelean paced the Pioneers with two runs scored as he added a hit and an RBI. Jordan Macias and Omar Sanchez each turned in one double, an RBI and a scored a run. Jake Ruiz had a hit, an RBI and a run scored while Ryan McSwain collected an RBI and reigning CCAA Player of the Week Samuel Esparza added a hit to his season total.
 
Matt Woinarowicz closed the final inning on the mound for the Pioneers and fanned one batter while not allowing any Warriors to reach base.
 
The Pioneers and Warriors will finish game two of their doubleheader tomorrow before completing the four game series with a single ballgame on Sunday.
