SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., -- For the first time since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2010, the Cal State East Bay baseball team improved to 7-0 with a doubleheader sweep over Cal State Sane Bernardino Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.

The Pioneers captured one-run victories in both ends of their twin bill sweep. The opening game of the afternoon needed extra innings for the Pioneers to pull out the 6-5 win.

Both teams got the offense started early as the Coyotes answered the Pioneers two runs in the opening inning with four runs through the first two innings. The Pios registered a season-best 17 hits in the doubleheader opener. East Bay would respond with two runs in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4 before both squads garnered runs in the final inning for regulation. But with the bases loaded in the top of the 11th inning
Samuel Esparza knocked an RBI single that brought in the game-winning run for CSUEB.

Esparza, a junior from San Pablo, finished with three hits and an RBI.
Omar Sanchez led the Pioneers with four hits, two runs scored and two RBI. A quartet of Pios notched multi-hit performances.
AJ Curtis and
Ryan McSwain compiled two hits, including doubles, and one run each. McSwain added an RBI.
Jordan Macias and
Kaleb Keelean both tallied two hits and one run scored.

Brian Martinez got the start on the mound for the Pioneers and tossed 7.2 innings. Martinez collected four strikeouts while facing 31 batters. Closer
Mark Woinarowicz (W, 2-0) secured his second win of the season after he took the mound and only allowed one run with one strikeout in the final 3.1 innings of action.

In the doubleheader finale, the Pioneers once again showed poise on the mound and steady bats down the stretch of the ballgame. Keelean continued his hot streak from the opening game and logged another two hits, with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Esparza turned his lone hit into a bases clearing triple in the second inning.

Dylan Dudley (W, 1-0) was the Pioneers opening hurler on the mound as he tallied a season-high four strikeouts. The senior from Newman tossed five innings and faced 23 batters. Freshman
Tristin Tatum (S, 1) collected the Pioneers first save of the season as he did not allow any runs in the final two innings on the hill.

Curtis added two hits, including a double and an RBI while Macias chipped in a double of his own and an RBI. McSwain, Sanchez,
Tim O'Dalaigh,
Jordan Sadovia and
Cole Anderson all registered one hit each.

The Pioneers and Coyotes will wrap up their four game series with a Sunday matinee scheduled for first pitch at noon.
