HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team will be competing in the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase were they will face off against West Region opponents in Central Washington and Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday and wrap up the tournament with matches against Hawaii Pacific on Friday and Azuza Pacific on Saturday night.
 
All East Bay games will be played at the Eagles Nest on the campus of host school Cal State L.A.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Pioneers kicked off their 2019 season with four matches in the annual Point Loma Seaside Challenge. East Bay ended the tournament with a 0-4 mark after falling to Seattle Pacific, Point Loma, Southern Nazarene and Concordia University (CA).
 
The Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team was on the losing end of its matches on Friday to open the opening weekend of the regular season at the Seaside Classic. Kicking their season off with a tournament doubleheader, the Pioneers were bested by Seattle Pacific in the first match and host school Point Loma in the second, both contest lasting three sets.
 
East Bay turned in a solid performance to start the day against a strong opponent, hitting .195 but it was the Falcons who ended up topping the Pioneers in kills, 37 to 28. Seattle Pacific took advantage of eight service aces and turned in an impressively efficient effort with just 17 attack errors in the entire match.
 
The Falcons squeaked out narrow victories over the Pioneers throughout all three sets. Senior Natahlee Wilson led the way with 12 digs. Sarah Stevelinck and Hannah Finnigan each added five digs each. Freshman Eliza Cannon turned in a strong offensive performance with 16 assists.
 
Tiana Weeks paced East Bay with six kills on 12 attack attempts as she finished the match with six points. Freshman Jasmyne Love also totaled six points including six kills and five digs. Tayler Templeman scored five points with four kills and Kelly Jing-min Markham compiled four points and four kills.
 
In the final match of the afternoon East Bay took on the host team of the Seaside Classic in Point Loma. It was a back-and-forth contest for the Pioneers but they never led after the 15-point mark in any set.
 
The Pioneers improved on the attack overall, hitting .218 but CSUEB totaled just 28 kills for the contest. Setter Eliza Cannon recorded her first career double double as a Pioneer with 24 assists and 11 digs. Jasmyne Love led East Bay with eight kills, five digs and 10 total points. Fellow freshman Kara Green tallied six kills to go along with six points.
 
Sarah Stevelinck added nine digs and Natahlee Wilson chipped in six digs.
 
The Cal State East Bay Volleyball team fell short in both their matches on Saturday to close out the opening weekend of the regular season at the Seaside Classic. Playing in their second straight double header in Southern California, the Pioneers were edged out by Southern Nazarene in the first match and fell to Concordia University (Calif.) in their final match of the tournament.
 
East Bay performed very well in their opening game of the day despite the game starting a 8:30 a.m. After falling in the first set 25-21, the Pioneers bounced back to take the next two sets 25-22 and 25-18. But it was the Crimson Storm who would end up raining on the Pioneers hopes for their first victory of the 2019 season. SNU finished with the best record any team posted at the Seaside Classic.
 
Southern Nazarene out-hit East Bay .255-.241 for the match but the Pioneers found their offensive rhythm to claim a 2-1 lead in the match and push SNU to the brink of defeat. In the final set of the contest SNU took an early 8-5 lead at the change of sides. East Bay put together one last gasp to tie the score at 8-8, but SNU put the match away with a 7-1 run to take the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
 
Freshman Eliza Cannon set a new career mark with 45 assists in the contest. She compiled 45 on the Pioneers 54 total assists. Cannon added six kills, seven digs and finished with nine points. Fellow freshman Jasmyn Love posted a double double with 13 digs and 12 kills. Love led the Pioneers with 17 points and tallied a .346 hitting percentage. Kara Green, also a freshman, recorded a team high 15 kills to go along with four digs and 15 points.
 
Sarah Stevelinck paced CSUEB with 19 digs and added five assists. Tayler Templeman racked up 12 digs, seven kills and eight total points.
 
The final match of the weekend saw East Bay taking on Concordia (Calif.), a team that finished the Seaside Classic with a 3-1 mark. The Pioneers were not particularly efficient in their fourth match in two days as they were out-hit .308-.175 for the game. East Bay jumped out to an early lead but the Eagles rallied back and pulled away toward the end of the set.
 
The second and third sets were much closer for the Pioneers although East Bay struggled on the attack overall, hitting .175 and totaling just 29 kills for the the contest. Eliza Cannon turned in another strong performance with 21 assists and 10 digs.
 
Steena Hubbard tallied seven kills, four blocks and 10 points. Kara Green added eight points and four digs while Sarah Stevelinck finished with 11 digs and two assists.
 
PIONEER POINTS
Freshman Kara Green leads the CCAA in kills per set (4.71) with 33 total kills on the season, which is tied for ninth in the league. Green is also second in the conference in points per set (4.79) and 10th in total points (33.5).
 
Fellow Freshman Jasmyne Love is eighth in the league in points per set (4.00) and total points (40). Love is also second in the CCAA service aces per set (0.70) and fifth with 10 total service aces. Eliza Cannon is seventh in the conference assists per set (8.15) and third in the CCAA in total assists (106). Sarah Stevelinck ranks sixth in CCAA in digs per set (4.40) and seventh in total digs in the league (44).
 
SCOUTING CENTRAL WASHINGTON
The Central Washington Wildcats are currently 2-2 on the season after losses to Northwest Missouri State and Washburn and wins over Drury and Emporia State. Ashley Kaufman leads CWU with 46 kills and is second on the squad with 52 points.
 
SCOUTING ALASKA FAIRBANKS
The Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks are off to a 2-2 start to the 2019 season after wins over Colorado at Colorado Springs and Fresno Pacific and losses to Northern State University and Colorado School of Mines. Lahra Weber is pacing the Nanooks with 49 kills and 61.5 total points.
 
SCOUTING HAWAII PACIFIC
The Hawaii Pacific Sharks are 4-1 on the season with victories over West Virginia State, Chico State and Minot State with their lone loss coming to Sonoma State. Perla Escobar is tops on the Sharks with 51 kills and 60 total points.
 
SCOUTING AZUZA PACIFIC
The Azuza Pacific Cougars are currently 3-1 on the season after wins over Western New Mexico, Eastern New Mexico and Saint Martin's. Their lone loss was to Cal State San Marcos. Annaka Jorgenson leads the Cougars with 43 kills and 52.5 total points.
