East Bay Closes UP North Tournament Against Michigan Tech

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Cal State East Bay closed out the UP North Tournament on Saturday morning with a three-set loss to Michigan Tech, falling 25-16, 25-23, 25-22 at Vandament Arena.

After Michigan Tech controlled the opening set, East Bay settled into the match and made the final two frames much tighter.

The Huskies hit .333 with 15 kills in the first set to take a 25-16 decision. East Bay responded in the second, battling through four ties and two lead changes as neither side was able to create the same separation.

The Pioneers stayed within reach throughout the second set, but Michigan Tech found the final points it needed to take the frame, 25-23, and move ahead 2-0.

East Bay continued to battle in the third.

The set featured another four ties and two lead changes, with the Pioneers again pushing the Huskies deep into the frame. Michigan Tech ultimately closed out the match with a 25-22 victory.

Lamona Lauhingoa posted her highest kill total of the weekend, leading East Bay with 15 kills on 39 attacks while hitting .205. She also added four service aces, seven digs and a solo block.

Pi'ilani Carvalho directed the offense with 25 assists while sharing the team lead with 13 digs. Kale'a Kuamo'o also finished with 13 digs and added a service ace.

Makaiya Gerhardt contributed three kills on eight attempts for a .250 hitting percentage, while Carys Fouser made an impact at the net with two solo blocks and two block assists.

East Bay finished with 29 kills, 28 assists, seven service aces, 45 digs and seven total blocks. Michigan Tech recorded 39 kills and hit .219 for the match.

Cal State East Bay concludes the UP North Tournament at 0-3 on the season.
