#5 Tritons Take Both Ends of Twinbill Despite Strong Pioneer Pitching

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team suffered a pair of defeats on the penultimate day of the 2019 season Friday afternoon as No. 5 ranked UC San Diego took both ends of the doubleheader at Pioneer Field.

CSUEB's pitchers combined to allow just two earned runs in 16 innings against the first-place Tritons, but a few errors proved costly, and the Pioneer bats weren't able to break out against UCSD's top two starters.

Dylan Dudley had outstanding stuff in the first game, scattering just seven hits in seven innings of work. Unfortunately defensive miscues extended both the third and fourth innings, which resulted in seven unearned runs coming across to score.

The Pioneers managed one hit off Brandon Weed, who pitched five frames to pick up his CCAA-leading ninth win. They took advantage of three walks to get on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the seventh, as Dakota Conners ripped an RBI single.

They also scored a run in the ninth on Jacob Eder's first home run, a towering solo shot into the left field trees. It wasn't enough to erase their early deficit, however, in an 8-3 defeat.

Game two was an extremely well-pitched battle between left-handers Brian Martinez and Preston Mott. Both allowed a run to score on a sacrifice fly, with Matt Cantelme notching the RBI for the Pioneers.

It was 1-1 heading into the sixth, when another poorly-timed error resulted in s three-run rally for the Tritons. And unfortunately the Pioneers were unable to answer back, totaling just one hit in the final three frames.

Martinez took the loss despite giving up just one earned run and allowing just three hits in six innings. The junior finishes his first season at East Bay with a nonetheless impressive 7-3 record.

The Pioneers recorded just four hits in the second game of the twinbill, with Hollar leading the way at 2-for-3.

CSUEB will wrap up the season with their final home game at Pioneer Field. The 12 p.m. first pitch will be preceded by the annual "Senior Day" ceremony to honor the 11 members of the Pioneer class of 2019.
