CSUEB Runners Tune Up at John Knight Twilight

MONMOUTH, Ore.
-- The Cal State East Bay men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Oregon Friday evening to compete in Western Oregon University's John Knight Twilight meet as the Pioneers continue to prepare for conference championships at the end of the month. 

There were several impressive performances from the CSUEB distance crew as the Pioneers raced against a dizen schools from the Pacific Northwest, including a few from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The majority of the East Bay women entered in the 1500 meters, and junior Andrea Romero led the way with a personal best time of 4:52.14. It was good for a seventh place finish and currently ranks as a top-25 time in the CCAA.

Romero was followed in the 1500m by Caitlin Amburgey in 16th place, Alex Cholometes in 18th, Jessica Mendez in 24th, and Jodi Go in 28th.

The Pioneers also had a pair of participants in the 800 meters, both of which scored points with top-eight finishes. Amanda Navarro took fifth place win 2:28.61, while Alondra Castro Ortiz notched a seventh lace finish and was just shy of her PR.

On the men's side, Israel Sotelo scored for CSUEB with a runner-up finish in his heat and a fourth-place overall showing in the 800 meters. The senior crossed the tape in 1:59.31. Freshman Bryan Llopis also raced the 880m, taking 12th overall. 

The rest of the Pioneer men ran the 1500 meters. Senior Jeremy Shaw and freshman Xavier Smith ran together in their heat and finished one-hundredth of a second apart, placing 28th and 29th overall. Oscar Mora and Melvin Esteva did the same thing in their heat and notched times that were less than a second behind their teammates' to place 30th and 31st. John Bradshaw was close behind that quartet in 38th place.

Rookie Austin Sanders competed in a pair of throwing events as well. He set a personal best with a distance of 12.53 meters (41 feet, 1.5 inches) in the shotput to finish 13th. The freshman also took 18th in the discus with a throw of 29.14 meters (95 feet, 7 inches). 

Next week the Pioneers return to Hayward to host their home meet, the annual East Bay Invitational, at Chabot College on Apr. 12-13.
