Otters Hang on to Top Pioneers 4-3 in Series Finale

SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team fell on the road to Cal State Monterey Bay by a final score of 4-3 on Sunday despite racking up 10 hits and receiving an outstanding relief performance from right-hander Mark Woinarowicz

The victory in the series finale gives the Otters a four-game sweep of the Pioneers and extends East Bay's losing streak to nine games.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead in the second inning, as Adam Hollar singled, Steve Robinson doubled, and Robert Lujan knocked in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly.

Monterey Bay answered right back, doing all their scoring for the day in the bottom of the second. Two errors and two walks by Dylan Dudley tied the game 1-1, a ground ball single gave CSUMB the lead, and a two-run single made it 4-1 in favor of the Otters.

Woinarowicz came in to escape the jam, then stayed in to fire six more scoreless frames. The sophomore allowed just four hits, walked one, and struck out five in the longest outing of his collegiate career.

The Pioneers were able to do much against Otter left-hander Jeffrey Ahern, but he exited the game in the fifth, and the following inning East Bay cut into its deficit. Ryan Thomasy walked and Kyosuke Ushimaru singled to set the table in the sixth, then Dakota Conners ripped an opposite field single to plate a Pioneer run.

Conners was the catalyst two innings later with a two-out single to left. After a passed ball, Hollar found a hole through the right side to bring Conners home and get East Bay within one.

The first two CSUEB batters of the ninth inning were retired, but Ryan McSwain extended the game with a double into the right-center gap, putting the tying run in scoring position. Although they out-hit the Otters 10-5 for the game, the Pioneers fell just one hit short as pinch-hitter Joey Dice grounded out to end the game.

Conners and McSwain each finished with two hits, and Hollar went 3-for-4 to lead the Pioneers offensively.

The road doesn't get any easier for CSUEB next week, as the team hits the road for SoCal and will look to snap their skid during a four-game series with Cal Poly Pomona.
