Hawks Rally to Take Rain-Halted Series Opener

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team finally completed a game for the first time this season on Saturday, but they nonetheless dealt with another rain-shortened day of action.

Today saw the continuation -- and conclusion -- of the series opener between the Pioneers and Holy Names that had started Friday at College of Alameda. They only made it through two innings before the game was suspended due to rain, but in that time CSUEB grabbed a 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers loaded the bases with no outs, scored the game's first run on a hit-by-pitch, and added another on a double-play ground out. Junior right-hander Dylan Dudley worked two hitless frames before conditions became unplayable.

They picked things up Saturday morning at Pioneer Field, and CSUEB quickly extended its lead to 3-0 on an RBI single by Jacob Eder. Freshman Blake Corsentino was effective early in his collegiate debut, tossing three scoreless innings for the Pioneers. But he finally ran into trouble in the sixth as a single, double, and sacrifice fly plated HNU's first run. The next batter took an 0-2 pitch over the wall in left-center to tie the score.

After a walk to end an 11-pitch at bat, the Hawks followed with two straight singles. And just like that, they had the lead. The Pioneers weren't able to push across a run in the final three innings, which were interrupted by a rain delay of nearly an hour in the seventh.

East Bay got two runners on in the eighth, but a double play ended the threat as the HNU bullpen sealed the narrow victory.

Kyosuke Ushimaru went 3-for-4 to lead the Pioneers offensively. Eder had two hits and knocked in a pair, and newcomer Omar Sanchez finished 2-for-5 with a double.

Sophomore Mark Woinarowicz pitched the final two scoreless frames following the rain delay.

The teams quickly got going with game two, and it moved at a brisk pace in the early going, thanks to solid pitching. The Pioneers struck first as they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first, then Adam Hollar got them on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly.

Junior starter Brian Martinez was outstanding for East Bay from the outset. The southpaw allowed three hits and struck out three in five scoreless innings as the Pioneers clung to their 1-0 advantage.

The rain came back in the sixth and Kyle Basch came out of the bullpen to make his Pioneer debut. An infield error extended the inning, and then another error on a pick-off attempt allowed the tying run to score for the Hawks. Shortly thereafter, the umpires called the teams off the field as the rain became too heavy.

The teams will resume game two of the series in the 6th inning on Sunday at College of Alameda -- weather permitting -- before attempting to play the regularly-scheduled finale.
