HAYWARD, Calif.
-- The Cal State East Bay men's and women's track teams opened the 2019 season by hosting a four-team meet Friday evening at Chabot College. The athletes contested 11 events on a clear, chilly evening under the lights.

On the women's side, freshman Alex Cholometes took home first place in the 3000 meters with a time of 11:03.04, followed closely by teammates Jessica Mendez in second and Caitlin Amburgey in fourth.

Brittney Duquette paced her way to third place in the 400 meters, while Claire Fisher, Angelina Ronquillo, and Jodi Go took fourth, fifth, and sixth in the 5000 meters.

Alondra Castro Ortiz turned in a tine of 2:32.78 to earn a fourth place finish in the 800 meters. Freshman Gisele Juarez also raced in that event in her first collegiate meet, taking ninth in 3:04.48

In the lone field event, Jamie McPherson threw the shot put 8.25 meters to notch a victory over six throwers from SF State.

On the men's side, the shot put was perhaps the highlight of the evening. Newcomer Austin Sanders won easily, posting a distance of 11.63 meters in his first competition as a Pioneer.

Israel Sotelo also notched a first place finish for CSUEB, winning the 5000 meters by more than nine seconds with a time of 16:41.32.

Ronaldo Flores was the runner-up in the 800 meters in 2:07.48, while Jeremy Shaw took second place in the 1500 meters in 4:22.72. John Bradshaw turned in a solid effort competing in the 3000 meters for the first time, earning a fifth place finish.

With a bit of racing under the belts, the Pioneers will now prepare for their first invitational meet of the Spring, which takes place at Stanislaus State in two weeks.
