Pioneers Sweep Doubleheader Behind Complete Games from Martinez, Corsentino

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team turned in a strong performance in all facets of the game of Saturday, sweeping Cal State San Bernardino in a doubleheader at Pioneer Field.

Both starting pitchers went the distance for East Bay, as they won by final scores of 7-4 and 8-0. After taking a 3-0 lead in the series against the Coyotes, the Pioneers are now over the .500 mark for the season at 7-6.

Junior southpaw Brian Martinez started the first game for the Pioneers and quickly found himself in trouble, giving up two runs on two hits in the top of the first. But Martinez was outstanding after that, allowed just three hits over the next eight innings as the CSUEB bats went to work.

East Bay tallied 11 hits for the game and started chipping away at their deficit in thr second inning. Kyosuke Ushimaru and Omar Sanchez both singled, giving Jacob Eder runners first and third. Eder ripped a hit to knock in Ushimaru and plate the first Pioneer run. The following inning, Adam Hollar walked and Ushimaru singled again to set the table. Sanchez was able to advance the runners on a deep fly, the Eder roped a two-run double to left center to put the home team ahead.

In the fourth, Joey Dice walked in front of Ryan McSwain, who crushed one into the trees beyond left field. It was the first home run for the Pioneers at their home field this season. The senior went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader.

Martinez allowed a run in the sixth and another in the seventh as the Coyotes clawed back within a run, but East Bay took advantage of a couple defensive miscues in the bottom of the eighth, allowing them to tack on a pair of insurance runs.

Martinez was able to finish off his first career complete game with two scoreless frames. He totaled seven strikeouts on the day.

Freshman Blake Corsentino had big shoes to fill in as the game two starter after Martinez's outstanding performance, and he responded by twirling an absolute gem. Corsentino's first career complete game and first collegiate victory was a two-hit shutout, as the carved up the Coyote lineup for seven innings. The right-hander fanned four and did not issue a walk, needing just 78 pitches to go the distance.

Offensively, the Pioneers have Corsentino plenty of support, scoring in each of the first five innings. Ushimaru knocked in a run in the first to give them an early lead. Then in the second, Dice belted a two-run homer to left, his first of the season. The Pioneers added three more in the third and anther in the fourth, with Steve Robinson, who finished 3-for-3 at the center of it. The final Pioneer run came thanks to pinch-hitter Nicholas Enrico, who split the right-center gap with a double to bring Matt Cantelme all the way around from first to score.

For the day, the Pioneers scored a total of 15 runs in 16 innings, while their pitching staff allowed just seven hits. They have a rested bullpen heading into Sunday's series finale, which is slated for an 11 a.m. first pitch.
