LINCOLN, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team opened its Spring schedule with a seventh place finish out of 13 teams this week at the Mikuni Sushi Shootout, hosted by Holy Names at the par-72 Catta Vedera Country Club.
The Pioneers posted team scores of 316 (+28) both Monday and Tuesday to finish the 36-hole event at 632 (+56). They were just one stroke behind Dixie State and conference rival Chico State, who finished tied for fifth. No. 13 ranked Cal State San Marcos fired a 279 (-9) in round two to run away with the team title by 29 strokes.Â
Individually, senior
Carolin Chang led CSUEB with a 14th place finish in the overall field of 73 golfer. She carded back-to-back rounds of 77 (+5) for a total score of 154 (+10), which put her 10 strokes behind the individual medalist.
Freshman
Drishti Karumbaya turned in the low round for the Pioneers on Tuesday with a 76 (+4) after shooting 81 the previous day. She earned a share of 24th place overall with a total of 157 (+13).
Vivian Yen also bounded back today after stumbling a bit in round one. She followed up her first-round 84 (+12) with a 78 (+6) to close out the tournament, finishing in a tie for 35th place at 162 (+18).
Hafsa Khan's week followed somewhat of an opposite trajectory. She had the second-lowest score on the team with a 79 (+7) on Monday, but ran into a few trouble holes this morning and shot an 84 (+12). The senior tied for 42nd place with a total of 164 (+19).
Mikia Fang also stumbled a bit after a very solid 79 (+7) in round one, posting a 93 (+21) on Tuesday to take 55th place at 172 (+27) for the week. The Pioneers also sent a pair of golfers to compete as individuals, with
Lulu Huang shooting 87-84 in the two rounds and
Angela Dayrit carding 88-83. Both finished at 171, earning a share of 53rd place.
The Pioneers now have two weeks off before they compete again, and their next event will be their home tournament. The annual Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout is set for Mar. 4-5 and will be contested at Corica Park in Alameda.Â
