PUEBLO, Colo. – Twelfth-ranked Cal State East Bay ended the first of two rounds at the NCAA West Regional, hosted by Colorado State Pueblo in Pueblo, Colorado, in 10th place among a pack of five teams within seven shots of one another entering everyone's second tour of the Par 71, 5,923-yard course at Pueblo Country Club.
Since inclement weather was forecasted during the three-day event, tournament officials adjusted accordingly by playing 36 holes on Monday instead of 18, which was originally scheduled.
Thanks to birdies on the par-5 5th and par-3 17th holes,
Carlota Eroles led CSUEB's quintet entering the second round at 5-over, tied for 12th place, with
Chantel Tsai trailing her teammate by three strokes in 30th place.
As was the cast with Eroles, Tsai also recorded a pair of birdies: one on the par-4 12 and on 17 as she and her teammate were two of only seven golfers to finish the opening round with a birdie on the 17th hole.
Torrie Bowman finished her opening round in 60th place at 11-over,
Kathy Leeper and
Nylani Stevenson finished nine spots behind Bowman at 12-over with the trio entering the second round just a handful of shots behind the top 25.
A majority of participants were able to complete their second round before play was suspended due to darkness, four of five Pioneers were included in that group of competitors that reached the clubhouse before sunset.
With another pair of birdies scattered throughout her second round, Eroles leads all Pioneers tied for 21st at 14-over. Also enjoying a strong end of the day was Bowman who was responsible for the lowest score of the second round by any CSUEB golfer, at 8-over, to wrap-up her day tied for 53rd at 19-over.
As was the case with Eroles, Bowman birdied the 12th hole; the former also birdied 18 with the latter finishing under par on 2.
Tsai will begin Tuesday's round tied for 64th at 21-over, Leeper and Stevenson are tied for 82nd at 26-over as the latter still needs to complete the 10th hole to officially conclude her second round.
Colorado Christian and Hawaii Hilo were the only two teams to fully complete all 36 holes on Monday's altered schedule.
Finishing the day at plus-34, Dallas Baptist will return to the course tomorrow morning with a two-stroke lead over Cal State San Marco with St. Mary's (TX) and the host institution, CSU Pueblo, tied for third at plus-45.
Ella Cheek (Dallas Baptist) holds a three-shot lead over Annika Yturralde (Point Loma) and Martha Laremark (UT Tyler) as all of their individual scores are through 36 holes.
The West Regional will conclude with tomorrow's 18-hole round, all participants in the West Regional will play 54 holes to determine who advances to the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship with the top five teams and top two individuals, not on an advancing team, punching their ticket to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, to compete for a national title beginning next Tuesday.
