On Saturday night, the Pioneers visit Cal State Monterey Bay for the first of two "Battle of the Bays" matchups between the teams two teams currently tied atop the CCAA North Division standings.
WEEKLY RECAP
Eats Bay seems to have hit its stride during a stretch of home matches over the last couple weeks. They were victories in all three contests last week, winn eight straight sets after falling behind 2-1 o Chico State last Tuesday.Â
After pulling off a five-set comeback to clinch both ends of the season series with the Wildcats, the Pioneers recorded a pair of dominant victories over the weekend. On Friday night, they turned in one of the best offensive performances by any CCAA squad all season, hitting .462 and making just five total attack errors in a three-set win over Sonoma State. It was perhaps even more one-sided on Saturday, as the Pioneers erased Humboldt State in straight sets and had the opportunity get nearly every player on the roster some action.
RAY REIGNS
Senior
Lindsey Ray paced the Pioneers with stellar play on both sides of the net, and was subsequently recognized as CCAA Player of the Week, making her the first Pioneer this season to claim the conference's weekly honor. Ray posted two double-doubles, averaging 3.45 kills and 3.72 digs per set with a .337 hitting percentage and four aces.Â
ABOUT SF STATE
The Pioneers swept the Gators went the teams met two weeks ago in San Francisco, but sandwiched around that match, SF State has three-set wins over Chico State, Humboldt State, and Sonoma State. The Gators have been strong offensively, hitting .241 as a team, led by two solid outside hitters in Jessica Haynie and Drew Morris and one of the better middle duos in the league in Bailey Johnson and Olivia Tabron.
ABOUT MONTEREY BAY
The Otters have been equally as hot as the Pioneers lately, riding an identical six-match winning streak, and the two upcoming meetings between two teams will likely have major implications for the North Division race. Anela Vicesio (2.97 kills/set) and Jenna Tobin (2.80 kill/set) have been the top two attackers for the Otters, who are bitting just .195 as a team.
