HAYWARD, Calif. -- With the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule hitting the home stretch, the Cal State East Bay volleyball team travels south for the final time this weekend to battle an extremely tough set of nationally-ranked opponents.

The Pioneers visit No. 19 ranked Cal Poly Pomona on Friday before taking on No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night, with both matches set for 7 p.m.

CSUEB has been impressive at home this season with a 6-1 record, but they're just 2-4 in CCAA road matches. The team will look to reverse that trend this weekend with their third trip to SoCal of the Fall.

WEEKLY RECAP
East Bay won its seventh straight match last Wednesday, sweeping SF State at home to clinch both matchups in the season series with the Gators. The Pioneers held SFSU to .147 hitting and had five players reach double-digit digs.

On Saturday, the team went on the road and had its winning streak snapped with an extremely tight four-set loss at Cal State Monterey Bay despite big nights from Deja Thompson in the middle and Taylor Templeman on the right side.

That loss dropped the Pioneers one game behind the Otters for the top spot in the CCAA North Division. Both teams have five conference contests remaining, including a re-match in Hayward next Saturday, Oct. 26, which will also be "Senior Night" for East Bay.

IRISH SETTER
Last week, Katie Ireland turned in a pair of strong performances, posting two double-doubles with averages of 11.57 assists and 2.86 digs per set. On Wednesday, she became the sixth player in school history to reach 1,000 career digs. Ireland now boasts the highest dig total of any setter in program history, and she's the only Pioneer ever to record 2,000 assists and 1,000 digs.

In addition, the senior is in position this week to cement her name atop CSUEB's all-time assist list. Ireland will enter the match against CPP needing 19 assists to surpass Annie Shrieve as the all-time leader in Pioneer history and break a record that has stood for 19 years. She currently ranks fifth in the CCAA averaging 10.13 assist per set, and has a chance to be the first East Bay player in the CCAA era to average at least 10 assists.

BRONCO BREAKDOWN
Pomona has been outstanding this season, with their only three losses coming to ranked teams. In their last match, they handed Cal State San Bernardino, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time, their first conference loss. The Broncos are led by a pair of formidable hitters in Andrea Bosnic (3.48 kills/set, 2.83 digs/set) and Kristen Hamlin (3.45 kills/set, 1.06 blocks/set, .371 pct), and their setter Kira Zimmerman is having an excellent season averaging 11.05 assists per set.

SCOUTING SAN BERNARDINO
The Coyotes spent a couple weeks ranked No. 1 in the nation before their 14-match win streak was snapped last weekend. They lead the CCAA is several statistical categories, paced by perhaps the best attacker in the conference in Alexis Cardoza (4.56 kills/set, 26 aces, 2.73 digs per set). Setter Jayann DeHoog ranks in the top five in the country averaging 12.07 assists per set.
