HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team will host their final home stand of the 2018 season with a Friday afternoon, "Kick For A Cure" Pink Game against Cal State San Bernardino on October 19 before wrapping up their home season with Senior Day against Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday morning, October 21.
 
The Pioneers will be honoring their four seniors: Bri Vallente, Aulani Fernandez, Miranda Gonzalez and Savannah Shultz prior to Sunday's game.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Cal State East Bay women's soccer program opened their "Battle of the Bays" contest with an 1-0 loss to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday afternoon, October 10 at the Otters Sports Complex.
 
The teams played to a scoreless first half and took a 0-0 tie into the intermission.
 
In the second half of action, with less than 10 minutes to go in the game, the Otters got a game-winning goal from Sahana Bojorquez to claim the 1-0 victory.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) clocked all 90 minutes in the box and recorded three saves.
 
The East Bay women's soccer program honored the 1988 national championship Pioneer soccer team by unveiling their championship banner pregame and then with a small ceremony during halftime.
 
On the field of play the 2018 Pioneer women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort against the second place Gators.
 
 The teams nearly took a scoreless tie into the intermission, but in the 41st minute SF State got a goal from Summer Langsam to take a, 1-0 lead into halftime.
 
Just minutes into the second half senior Savannah Schultz (Folsom, Calif.) knotted the game at 1-1 with a blast from 30 yards out to the right side of the goal. It was Shultz's first goal of the 2018 season as she was assisted by junior Chace Miguel (Hollister, Calif.).
 
The Gators added two more goals in the 65th and 74th minutes to claim the 3-1 conference rivalry win.
 
Freshman Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) notched all 90 minutes in goal recording three saves on the afternoon.
 
PIONEER POINTS
The Pioneers got off to a 5-0 to the season which is the program's best start since joining the CCAA. Cal State East Bay had only allowed one goal through those five games.
 
Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.) leads the Pioneers with four goals scored which are tied for fifth in the conference. Buitrago's nine points are also tied for fifth in the CCAA and her three game-winning goals are tied for second in the conference.
 
Chace Miguel (Hollister, Calif.) is tied for second on the Pioneers with three goals and seven points. Miguel second on the squad with two goals in CCAA action and she has two assists on the season. Jamie McPherson (San Leandro, Calif.) also has three goals on the season along with two assists and eight points. All three of McPherson's goals have come in CCAA action including the game- winning goal in East Bay's win over Dominguez Hills.
 
Keionna Claypoole (Sacramento, Calif.) and Jordan Lemieux (Bothell, Wash.) also have two assists apiece to lead the Pioneers.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) has racked up 48 saves and five shutouts. Vasquez-Ortiz is tied for second in the conference lead with five shutouts, including three shutouts in CCAA action.
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO
The Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes enter the matchup with the Pioneers with a 4-9 mark on the with a 3-5 conference record after back-to-back losses to UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos. Kelly Kevershan leads the Coyotes with six goals on the season and is tied for the team lead with Alyssa Campa and Nora Perez with two assists each. Carly Luna leads CSUSB with 57 saves through 10 games with one shutout.
 
SCOUTING CAL POLY POMONA
The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos come into the weekend contest against the Pioneers with a 4-8-2 overall record with a 0-6-2 CCAA mark after tying Cal State San Marcos before falling to UC San Diego. Taylor Scott, Samantha Putnam and Natalie Di Angelo all lead CPP with two goals each with Scott adding one assist. Sydney Williams leads the Broncos with 40 saves through 12 games including five shutouts.
