SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Cal State East Bay opened the 2026 season Friday with a 4-0 loss to Westminster at Dumke Field.
Westminster established the early advantage, opening the scoring in the 11th minute before adding goals in the 16th and 26th minutes to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Bianca Avila made the start in goal for East Bay and faced consistent pressure during the opening 45 minutes. She recorded two saves before Yvette Torres took over in goal to begin the second half.
The Pioneers came out of the break looking to create more going forward.
Grace Moeder generated East Bay's first shot of the match in the 54th minute, putting an attempt on target that forced a save. Daniela Aceves followed with another shot less than two minutes later as East Bay began to find more opportunities in the attacking third.
East Bay also earned a pair of second-half corner kicks while keeping Westminster off the board for nearly the entire second half. Torres made a save in the 73rd minute to maintain the three-goal margin before the Griffins added the final goal in the 85th minute.
Moeder and Aceves accounted for East Bay's two shots, with Moeder putting her attempt on goal. Avila and Torres each played 45 minutes in goal, combining for three saves.
Cal State East Bay moves to 0-1 to begin the season and returns to action Tuesday against Seattle Pacific. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Oakland Roots Training Facility in Alameda.
