ALAMEDA, Calif. — Cal State East Bay battled Western Washington on Monday afternoon, falling 3-1 at the Oakland Roots Practice Facility.
Western Washington opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Chloe Van Wey converted a free kick to give the Vikings an early 1-0 advantage.
East Bay responded in the 23rd minute.
Jenna McDonnell played a through ball from midfield that sent Kella Folkerts into a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper. Folkerts finished the chance to pull the Pioneers even at 1-1 and score her second goal in as many matches.
Western Washington regained the lead in the 31st minute. Bianca Avila initially stopped a shot from Keira Reeves, but Triya Mitchell converted the follow-up to give the Vikings a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.
East Bay looked for another response after the break, with Taylor Hodges generating a pair of attempts during the opening 14 minutes of the second half.
The Vikings extended their lead in the 67th minute when Reese Walker scored to make it 3-1.
Avila remained busy throughout the second half, recording eight saves after halftime. The Pioneers created another opportunity in the 78th minute when Kaylie McKee put a shot on goal, forcing a save.
Folkerts led East Bay with three shots and scored the Pioneers' lone goal. Hodges added two shots, while McKee recorded East Bay's other shot on goal.
Avila played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with 12 saves. East Bay finished with six shots, including two on goal, while Western Washington recorded 25 shots with 15 on target.
Cal State East Bay moves to 0-3 on the season.
