SALINAS, Calif. -- Junior newcomer
Carolin Chang made a strong impression in her first tournament as a Pioneer, taking third place individually to lead the Cal State East Bay women's golf team this week at the California Bays Invitational, the opening event of the 2017-18 season.Â
The Pioneers collectively finished in a tie for fourth place in the nine-team field at Corral de Tierra Country Club with a 36-hole total of 641 (+65). They finished 30 strokes behind the champion and co-host, Cal State Monterey Bay.
Chang, a native of Taiwan who joined the Pioneers after capturing back-to-back individual state championships at Santa Barbara City College, turned in a two-round score of 151 (+7). In Tuesday's final round she posted the lowest score on the course with a 74 (+2), highlighted by four birdies. She also tied for second in the overall field with 22 total pars over the two days. The junior ended up three strokes behind CSUMB's Linnea Karlsson for the individual medal, but nonetheless made the All-Tournament team with her top-five finish.
Senior
Julia Youn notched a top-20 finish as well, tying for 18th place with a total of 161 (+17). She turned in a consistent performance, carding 80 (+8) in round one and 81 (+9) in round two. Fellow senior
Taylor Wyss matched Youn's 80 on Monday, then shot 82 (+10) on Tuesday morning to finish one stroke behind her teammate at 162 (+18) in 21st place.
Junior
Lulu Huang, playing in her first tournament since 2015-16 after using a redshirt last season, finished in a tie for 33rd in the overall field of 53 golfers at 171 (+27). She contributed to CSUEB's team score in the first round with an 84 (+12), but stumbled a bit in round two with an 87 (+15).
Senior
Jamie Enseki was the only Pioneer besides Chang to improve her score from the first round to the second, and in her case the improvement was significant. She had just two pars on Monday en route to a 91 (+19), but bounced back to make 11 pars on Tuesday and carve eight strokes off her score. Enseki contributed to East Bay's team total in the final round with an 83 (+11), which moved her up to 36th place with her overall total of 174 (+30).Â
Next up, the Pioneer women have two weeks off before competing in the annual Sonoma State Fall Invitational on Oct. 16-17 in Santa Rosa.Â
