Pioneers Set For CCAA Home Meeting Against Otters

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Pioneers men's soccer team will return to home for a midweek match against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday evening, September 27 at Pioneer Stadium. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. Cal State East Bay will face San Francisco State on Friday afternoon, September 29 at 12:30 p.m. 
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
Easy Bay moved to 2-6-1 on the year and 0-4 in conference action after falling in back-to-back games against #23 Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino on their weekend road trip.
 
Two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) player of the week Sergi Monso scored a first-half hat trick as the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos defeated the the Cal State East Bay men's soccer team 5-0 on Friday evening, September 22 at Kellogg Field.
 
Offense came easy for as Monso came out firing scoring his first goal in the opening two minutes of play, taking the keeper right before finishing in the left corner of the goal.
 
The Broncos held a hefty margin on the shot chart with a 14-5 advantage over the Pioneers. East Bay was only afforded one shot at the frame opportunity compared to 10 from Cal Poly Pomona.
 
After goal by Monso in the 14th and 35th minutes to take a 3-0 lead at the intermission. Luis Najrea Jr., and Jimmie Villalobos put in the final two goals of the second half to help CPP claim the 5-0 victory.
 
Sophomore Carlos Moreno logged a game-high five saves for the CSUEB. His 13 shots faced were the second most for him this season.
 
The Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes scored a pair of second-half goals to claim a 3-1 victory over Cal State East Bay men's soccer team in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) soccer Sunday afternoon, September 24 at Premier Field.
 
Cal State East Bay led the shot advantage over the Coyotes 13-11 as both team were even solid with six shots on the goal each. But CSUSB dominated the field of play and dictated the pace of play throughout the game.
 
CSUEB scored its only goal on an own goal in the 52nd minute to tie the game at 1-1. San Bernardino the game winning goal on a penalty kick in the 64th minute. Eighteen minutes later, freshman Omari Mark displayed an athletic move where he forced the GK out and popped a shot up and over for the final margin.
                                                              
Junior goal keeper Omar Coronel racked up three saves for the Pioneers in his third start of the season. He is second on the team with 11 saves and has a .688 save percentage.
 
SANCHEZ'S SIZZLING START
East Bay's Evan Sanchez (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) leads the Pioneers with five goals and ten points so far on the season. Sanchez is tied for fourth place in the conference in goals and is tied for fifth in the CCAA in total points. Last week's Cal State East Bay Male Athlete of the Week for (Sept. 4-10).
 
DOUBLE-STUFFING GOALIES
The East Bay goalie duo of sophomore Carlos Moreno and junior Omar Coronel have both been superb while splitting time in goal. Moreno leads the CCAA with 5.50 saves per game and is fourth in the conference with 33 total saves. He collected a career best eight saves in the Pioneers match against Westminster College. For Coronel, he has only given up five goals through 35 shots faced in four games. He logged a career best four saves in a 1-1 tie against ARTU. Both goalies have recorded one shutout apiece on the season.
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY
The Otters are come into the game with a 0-4 mark in conference action and a 1-7 overall record after losses to Cal State San Bernardino and #23 Cal Poly Pomona. Adrian Rebollar leads CSUMB with two goals on the year. Steven Moreno, Darren Sinclad, Osvaldo Espinoza and Christopher Leth all have one assist apiece for the Otters. Goal keeper Jesus Ochoa has started six games for Monterey Bay and leads the team with 22 saves and one shutout.

SCOUTING SAN FRANCISCO STATE
SF State will enter the showdown against the Pioneers with a record of 5-1-1 and a 0-1-1 mark in CCAA action. The Gators are coming off a loss to Chico State and a tie against Stanislaus State. Rainer Plantinos leads SF State with seven goals. Richard Leon, KJ Ahlo, Nihus Soloman and Andy Altamirano all have two assists apiece fro the Gators. In goal, San Francisco State is led by Kyle Harmina who has started every game and has registered 34 saves.
