ALAMEDA, Calif. — Cal State East Bay earned a 2-2 draw against Dominican on Wednesday at The Oakland Roots Facility, responding from an early deficit and taking a second-half lead before the Penguins found the equalizer.
Dominican struck almost immediately, scoring just 45 seconds into the match to take a 1-0 advantage.
East Bay responded quickly and began creating consistent pressure in the attacking third. Guilherme Azevedo put a shot on goal in the third minute before the Pioneers found the equalizer in the 11th.
Jefferson Parada converted a penalty kick to even the match at 1-1, giving him goals in back-to-back matches after scoring against UT Dallas on Saturday.
The Pioneers continued to generate opportunities throughout the opening half, finishing the period with 10 shots and three corner kicks. Misael Meza forced another save in the 19th minute as East Bay continued looking for the go-ahead goal.
That breakthrough came shortly after halftime.
Isaac Bandabaila set up Alejandro Zarate in the 50th minute, and Zarate converted to give East Bay a 2-1 advantage. The Pioneers continued to attack after moving in front, with Kiichi Murakami putting another shot on goal in the 59th minute.
Dominican eventually answered in the 72nd minute, with Patrick Zamora Salazar heading home a cross off a free kick to tie the match at 2-2.
East Bay continued searching for a winner over the closing stages and generated several late opportunities. Murakami and Zarate each recorded attempts before Azevedo forced saves in both the 86th and 90th minutes. Zarate put one final attempt on goal as time expired, but Dominican goalkeeper Colin Nestor made the save to preserve the draw.
The Pioneers finished with a 21-10 advantage in shots, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal, and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Zarate led East Bay with six shots and scored his first goal of the season, while Azevedo finished with four shots, three on goal. Julian Valle added three attempts.
Adan Corona played all 90 minutes in goal for East Bay. Both of Dominican's shots on goal resulted in goals.
Cal State East Bay moves to 0-2-1 on the season.
