ALAMEDA, Calif. — Cal State East Bay fell 7-1 to Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon at the Oakland Roots Practice Facility.
Monterey Bay opened the scoring in the second minute before East Bay generated a pair of early opportunities. Alejandro Zarate put a shot on goal in the seventh minute, and Guilherme Azevedo followed with another attempt shortly after.
The Otters extended their advantage on a penalty kick in the 26th minute before adding two more goals in quick succession to make it 4-0. Monterey Bay added another late in the half and carried a 5-0 advantage into the break.
East Bay continued to look for opportunities after halftime.
After Monterey Bay added a sixth goal early in the second half, Bennett Richards put the Pioneers on the board in the 52nd minute. A clearance from a Monterey Bay defender deflected off Richards and into the net for his first goal of the season.
The Otters added their final goal in the 63rd minute, but East Bay continued to generate chances over the remainder of the match.
Richards put two more shots on goal in the 78th and 79th minutes, forcing saves on both attempts. Zarate nearly added another for the Pioneers in the 89th minute when his shot struck the woodwork.
Richards led East Bay with four shots, three on goal and the Pioneers' lone goal. Zarate finished with three shots, including one on target, while Misael Meza also recorded a shot on goal.
East Bay finished with 13 shots, including five on goal. Adan Corona played the second half in goal and recorded two saves after Jacob Frederick started and played the opening 45 minutes.
Cal State East Bay moves to 0-3-1 on the season.
