Dice Homers as Pioneers Split Twinbill with Toros

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay baseball team split their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader with the visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Saturday, April 1 at Pioneer Field.
 
The improved to 19-10 on the season and 10-7 in CCAA action after taking game one 8-3 and dropping the doubleheader finale 8-4.
 
In the opening game the Pioneers exploded for eight runs on 11 hits. East Bay took an early lead in the bottom of the second frame when Wyatt Foreman reached on an infield error to lead off the inning. Kris Bartlett followed with a single through the right side.
 
After Matt Cantelme was walked, Foreman scored CSUEB's first run on a wild pitch. Joey Dice was walked in the next at bat and Marcus Wise followed Up with two-run RBI single to right center field to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead after two innings.
 
Wyatt Foreman finished with a hit, a run scored and a RBI and Kris Bartlett added two hits and a RBI for East Bay. Matt Cantelme scored a run and Marcus Wise tallied two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
 
The Toros would close the Pioneer lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. But East Bay responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth frame to claim a 4-2 advantage.
 
Michael Thomas pelted a RBI double to left field scoring Wise who reached on a single to the shortstop. Thomas went 2-for-4 from the plate with a double, a triple and a RBI.
 
Dominguez Hills added their final run in the top of the seventh inning but East Bay erased any chance of a Toro comeback with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.
 
Sophomore Joey Dice led off the inning with a solo shot over the left field wall. For Dice it was his first home run of the season and the Pioneers sixth homer as a team. Dice completed the outing with a hit, two runs scored, a RBI and a home run.
 
Dallas Dey followed Dice's homer with a double through the left side. Troy Resch brought Dey home with a single up the middle. After Resch advanced on a wild pitch Wyatt Foreman singled to right field to scored Resch.
 
Evan Steele came in to pinch run for Foreman and made the most of his opportunity as he stole second base. He then collected extra bases as Kris Bartlett sent him home with a single through the right side as the Pioneer claimed an 8-3 victory in the opening game.
 
Dallas Dey had scored a run and hit a double, Troy Resch added two hits, a RBI and a run scored. Kris Bartlett compiled two hits and a RBI.
 
Alex Vesia (W, 2-4) picked up the win after leading the Pioneers with 5.0 innings tossed. He finshed with five strikeouts while not allowing any earned runs and walking only one batter. Nick Sergi got the start on the mound for East Bay and retied two batters with no walks through 4.0 innings.
 
In the doubleheader finale both teams were impressive offensively with 11 hits for the Pioneers and 15 hits for the Dominguez Hills. But it would be the visiting Toros that converted their hits into more runs.
 
The Toros jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the second inning of action. The Pioneers would answer with four runs scored through the next four innings.
 
After reaching base on a walk and advancing on a wild pitch, Wyatt Foreman scored East Bay's first run on a RBI single through the right side by Kris Bartlett. Foreman finished with a run scored and Bartlett added a hit and a RBI.
 
Joey Dice singled to left center field to lead off the bottom of the fifth frame followed by a single up the middle by Dallas Dey. Dey advanced on a balk and scored on a Michael Thomas RBI double to left field.
 
Dallas Dey went a perfect 5-for-5 from the plate with two runs scored and two stolen bases to lead the Pioneers. Michael Thomas completed the outing with a double and a RBI. Joey Dice recorded two hits and a RBI.
 
In the bottom of the sixth Foreman and Zack Perugi were walked to lead off the inning. Bartlett reached on a fielder choice on the next at bat and Joey Dice followed with a RBI single to left field scoring Perugi. Zack Perugi complied a double and a run scored.
 
Dey scored the Pioneer final run on a sacrifice fly by Tory Resch. Resch had a hit and scored a run as East Bay fell in game two 8-4.
 
Joel Lamont (L, 4-2) lead the Pioneers with 5.0 inning pitched and one strikeout. Joey Portugal also recorded a strikeout during his 2.1 innings on the mound. Brandon Acosta, Joshua Kubiske and Derek Oetken all saw time on the mound for the Pioneers.
 
East Bay and Dominguez Hills will compete in a winner take all series finale on Sunday, April 2 at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
