Pioneers Rout Cougars Behind School Record 27 Hits

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team defeated Cal State San Marcos in a 22-10 blowout on Sunday to take two out of three games from the Cougars in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series.

The Pioneers (14-7, 5-4 CCAA) scored in eight of the nine innings and broke the program record with 27 hits. CSUSM falls to 12-10 on the season and 2-8 in CCAA play.

East Bay hung six runs on the board in the third, six more in he fourth, and four in the fifth to pull away from Cougars. Sophomore Joey Dice had an historic game with the bat, matching the school records for hits and runs in a game individually, finishing 6-for-6 with six runs scored. He also set a new program record with four doubles.

Michael Thomas was a double short of hitting for the cycle, going 4-for-6 with a home run and six RBI. Marcus Wise finished 5-for-6 with four runs, four RBI, and two stolen bases.

Junior right-hander Jacob Call allowed two earned runs on five hits in 5.0 innings to improve to 3-1 for the season. Joey Portugal's scoreless streak was snapped as he allowed five runs in two innings, then senior Brandon Acosta finished off the game with 2.0 scoreless frames.

Just over a year after setting the record with 26 hits in a win over Fresno Pacific, the Pioneers topped that to cap off an impressive offensive weekend. 14 of their 27 hits were for extra bases, including home runs by Thomas and Jackson Foss. The Pioneers also stole four bags and drew seven walks.

CSUEB is now batting .305 as a team after out-scoring the Cougars 49-34 in just three games over the weekend. The squads returns home to host another South team, Cal State San Bernardino, next weekend as they cling narrowly to second place in the North Division standings.
