SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay Baseball team opened the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule with a huge road win at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, as
Alex Vesia and
Andrew Fernandez combined to shut out the Otters by a final score of 4-0.
The Pioneers (10-3, 1-0 CCAA) and Otters (7-4, 0-1 CCAA), who last year shared the CCAA North Division title, each totaled just four hits in a tremendous pitcher's dual.Â
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the top of the first, as
Kris Bartlett led off the game with his league-leading 16th walk of the season and came around to score on a
Michael Thomas RBI ground out.
Otter starter Bryan Granger settled in after that, and he and Vesia traded zeroes through seven innings. In the top of the eighth, the Pioneers took advantage of three Monterey errors to score a pair of insurance runs without recording a hit. They tacked on another run in the ninth on Bartlett's two-out opposite field single with the bases loaded.Â
Vesia was outstanding, holding the potent Otter lineup at bay all afternoon. He gave up just three hits and struck out eight in 7.0 scoreless frames to pick up his first win of the season.Â
Fernandez tossed the final two innings, striking out four, to record his third save.
The Pioneers stole five bases in the game, including two by
Marcus Wise to add to his league-leading total. They are now 36-for-38 as a team this season.
Wyatt Foreman was the only player on either team to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 to improve his batting average to a team-best .423.
East Bay has now won five of its last six games against the Otters over the last two seasons, including a victory at last year's CCAA Tournament. The four-game series between the two teams continues in Hayward on Saturday with a doubleheader set for 11 a.m. at Pioneer Field.Â
