CORONA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team finished in eighth place out of 18 schools at the 2017 California Baptist Invitational this week, turning in a 36-hole total of 640 (+64).
Cal State East Bay carved six strokes off its Monday score for a Tuesday team total of 317 (+29), the fifth-lowest second round score of any team in the field. The host Lancers captured the team championship at 603 (+27). Of the seven teams to finish in front of the Pioneers, six of them are ranked in the top 30 nationally according to GolfStat.
Junior
Taylor Wyss broke 80 for the second straight round and finished off her best tournament since placing eighth individually at Western Washington. Wyss shot 79 (+7) in round two for a two-day total of 155 (+11), giving her a share of 17th place, 10 strokes behind the individual medalist.
Fellow junior
Julia Youn tallied 12 pars in Tuesday and turned in the low card of the day for CSUEB with a 75 (+3). She finished two strokes behind Wyss at 157 (+13), tied for 24th place in the overall field of 100 golfers.
Youn improved by seven strokes from round one to round two, which was impressive but not the largest improvement on the team.
Kelsi Valenzuela shaved off eight strokes to finish with an 80 (+8) in the second round, putting her in 59th place at 168 (+24) overall.

Hafsa Khan was the mark of consistency. She matched her Monday score with another 83 (+11), good for the fourth contribution to East Bay's team total. Khan ended up with a share of 52nd place at 166 (+22).Â
Sienna Starck stumbled a bit with an 86 (+14) in round two, putting her even with Valenzuela for the week at 168 (+24).Â
After taking next week off from competition, the Pioneers will return home for their next tournament. They are scheduled to host the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout on Mar. 6-7 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, Calif.
