LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay sophomore Leo Skellenger captured the individual championship Saturday morning at UC San Diego's Triton Classic to lead a strong performance by the Pioneer cross country teams. 

Skellenger's first career first-place finish in a collegiate meet helped the CSUEB men take second place in the team standings. The men's squad came up just five points short of first-place UCSD and defeated California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foes Humboldt State, SF State, and Cal State L.A. The Pioneer women finished seventh overall, led by sophomore Megan Satterfield's 15th place individual finish. East Bay topped conference rivals Cal State L.A. and Sonoma State in the women's field.

Skellenger's 8k time of 26:25.23 out-paced Cal Poly Pomona's Ruben Dominguez by just two seconds. Fellow sophomore Pedro Cruz crossed the finish line in fourth place, five seconds behind his teammate in 26:30.82. Chris Lessard in 12th place, Esteban Leon in 14th, and Israel Sotelo in 15th were the other three scoring runners for the East Bay men.

Satterfield, who last week ran the fastest 6k in school history in Sacramento, turned in a time of 22:56.07 to pace the Pioneer women for the second straight week. Freshman Makenna Duda was the team's second finisher, taking 33rd place in 23:44.02. Dana Pollard (46th place), Claire Fisher (57th), and Kandace Compton (59th) rounded out CSUEB's scoring quintet.

Both Pioneer squads are back in the Bay Area next weekend for the annual Santa Clara Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park on Saturday, Oct. 14. Below are the full East Bay results from the Triton Classic.
