HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Pioneer men's soccer team will host two Southern division California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) programs to Pioneer Stadium this weekend. Cal State East Bay will host the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Friday afternoon, October 6 at 4:30 pm and will end the weekend with a match against the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles on Sunday morning at 11:30 am.

WEEK IN REVIEW
The Pioneers are 2-8-1 on the season and 0-6 in CCAA play. The Pioneers dropped two tough matches against Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State, teams ranked in the bottom tier of the conference standings.

The offense came early and often in the Pioneer men's soccer 2-1 loss to rival Cal State Monterey Bay in Wednesday evening's CCAA action in Pioneer Stadium.

Every goal of the match was scored before the intermission and all before the 20th minute of action. The Otters got on the board first with back-to-back goals in the 5th and 7th minutes by Makenna Pendleton and Adrian Rebollar.

Jared Johnson (Los Altos, Calif.) tallied his first goal of the season in the 15th minute he put in the rebound off a
Jonathan Cuevas shot after a perfectly placed free kick from
Jared Simarago, The match would end by a score of 2-1.

The Pioneers were aggressive throughout the outshooting the Otters 17-9 and leading the shot on goal advantage 12-6.

Evan Sanchez led all players with five shots including four attempts at the goal.
Grant LaFleur and
Jonathan Cuevas each tallied three shots and two shots at the the frame.
Tin Nguyen and two shots on the night and
Carlos Moreno.
Christian Mendoza and
Luis Salazar both ended the match with one shot attempt.

Omar Coronel racked up all 90 minutes in the goal and added four saves to his season total.

The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 setback loss in their CCAA road match against San Francisco State Friday afternoon in Cox Stadium.

The Pioneers move to 2-8-1 on the season and a 0-6 in CCAA play while the Gators improve to 6-1-1 on the year and 1-1-1 in conference action.

SF State's offense was powered by two first half goals by Rainer Plantinos and Jonny Villeda. Plantinos scored his team-leading eighth goal in the 22nd minute. The ball was chipped into the box, where Plantinos tracked it down in front of the keeper and finished to his left to give SF State the early lead. Villeda's goal in the 41st minute came off the put back from a Gator shot that slammed off the left post. A wide open Villeda reeled back and finished to the near post.

East Bay stepped up their offensive aggression and production after the intermission. The Pioneers threatened early in the second half with a pair of corner kicks in the 53rd minute.

East Bay came up with a goal in the 74th minute. Two Gators defenders converged on the ball after a
Jonathan Cuevas shot. The Gators goalkeeper came out to make the stop but instead the ball bounced around and
Jared Johnson put it into the back of the net with the assist from
TJ Butler.

For Johnson, a senior from Los Altos, Calif., it was he second consecutive game with a goal. And for Butler, the senior transfer from Adelphi University, it was his second helper of the 2017 season.

Grant LaFluer paced the Pioneers with six shots on the afternoon. Johnson finished with four attempts and Cuevas added three shots of his own. East Bay held the shot advantage 13-12 but it was SF State who put seven shots at the frame to only three from CSUEB.

Omar Coronel got the start in the goal and recorded a career-best five saves for East Bay.

SANCHEZ'S SIZZING START
East Bay's
Evan Sanchez (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) leads the Pioneers with five goals and ten points so far on the season. Sanchez is tied for fourth place in the conference in goals and is tied for fifth in the CCAA in total points. Last week's Cal State East Bay Male Athlete of the Week for (Sept. 4-10).

Senior
Jared Johnson (Los Altos, Calif.,) is tied for second on the team with two goals. Johnson scored his first two goals on the season in back-to-back to games against Monterey Bay and SF State.

DOUBLE-STUFFING GOALIES
The East Bay goalie duo of sophomore
Carlos Moreno and junior
Omar Coronel have both been superb while splitting time in goal. Moreno is second in the CCAA with 4.71 saves per game and is fifth in the conference with 33 total saves. He collected a career best eight saves in the Pioneers match against Westminster College. For Coronel, he has only given up nine goals through 56 shots faced in six games. He logged a career best five saves in a 1-2 loss to SF State. Both goalies have recorded one shutout apiece on the season.

SCOUTING CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS
The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros enter the weekend with a 6-3-1 mark on the season and a 3-1 record in conference play. The Toros went 1-1-1 last week after defeating Cal State San Marcos 2-0, falling to Cal State L.A. 4-1 and playing to a 0-0 draw against #2 Simon Fraser. Juan Hernandez leads CSUDH with four goals. Leonardo Nogueira, Guillermo Saldana, Gilberto Rocha and Frankie Hession-Harris all have a team-leading two assists. Chase Gentry leads Dominguez Hills in goal with 26 saves and three shutouts through seven games.

SCOUTING CAL STATE L.A.
The Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles are 8-1-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in conference play. The Golden Eagles tied UC San Diego 0-0 and defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 4-1 to last week. Julian Zamora is third in the CCAA with seven goals and David Elizaga is tied for the conference lead with seven assists. Steven Barrera has tallied 28 saves and six shutouts through ten games for CSULA.
