SAN MARCOS, Calif.
-- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team wrapped up its fall season on Tuesday with an impressive fifth place finish at Cal State San Marcos's Cougar Fall Classic.

The Pioneers totaled 312 (+24) in round one at Twin Oaks Golf Course, then followed that up with an outstanding team score of 302 (+14) in the second round to finish the 36-hole tournament at 614 (+38).

CSUSM's "B" team won the event at 594 (+18), followed by the Cougar "A" team in second place. Sonoma State and Dixie State tied for 3rd, just one stroke ahead of the Pioneers at +37. East Bay was in a battle with those two squads throughout round two and just missed a third place finish. Nonetheless, all three schools ahead of the Pioneers are ranked in the top 50 nationally according to Golfstat.

Individually, two CSUEB golfers shined especially brightly during a tournament when all seven Pioneers in competition turned in solid play. For the second straight event to begin her Pioneer career, Carolin Chang posted a third place finish. The junior carded rounds of 73 (+1) and 75 (+3) on the par-72 course for a two-day total of 148 (+4). She ended up just one stroke behind Sabrina Virtusio (Sonoma State) and Sarah Garcia (CSUSM), who tied for the individual medal.

Senior Julia Youn was also outstanding for East Bay, finishing just one stroke behind Chang in a tie for fourth overall. Like her teammate, Youn turned in consistent play, shooting 75-74 for a total of 149 (+5).

Fellow senior Taylor Wyss added the third score to the team total on both days, and finished with a particularly strong effort on Tuesday. She shot 81 (+9) in round one, then bounced back with a 76 (+4) in round two, putting her in a tie for 25th place in the overall field of 80 golfers at 157 (+13).

Lulu Huang stumbled on Monday with an opening round 86 (+14), but she was excellent on Tuesday, carving nine strokes off her score. Huang's 77 (+5) in the second round was crucial to CSUEB's push up the leaderboard. The junior took a share of 39th place with a total of 163 (+19).

Senior Jamie Enseki contributed the fourth score to the team total in the first round, carding an 83 (+11). The Pioneers didn't need her score on Tuesday thanks to Huang's bounce-back round, but Enseki was consistent, totaling 84 (+12) in round two. Her total of 167 (+23) gave her a share of 52nd place.

Head coach Alan Sue also sent a pair of individuals down to San Marcos to compete unattached from the team. Hafsa Khan took advantage of the opportunity and gave the Pioneers very strong play, carding 76-80 for a total of 156 (+12) and a tie for 22nd place individually. Sienna Starck snagged a share of 55th place after shooting 79-89 for a total of 168 (+24).

With the final event of the fall complete, the Pioneers are off from competition until February, when they will begin a stretch of six more tournaments in preparation for the first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Golf Championships in mid-April.
