RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's cross country team had an historic morning on Saturday, despite taking just five runners to compete at the UC Riverside Invitational.
The Pioneers saw a program record fall as senior
Kelsey Lamb turned in the fastest 6k time ever by a CSUEB runner in competition, crossing the tape in 22:28.73.
As a team, East Bay took fifth place among Division II institutions. They beat conference rival Cal State L.A., as well as Chapman and Long Beach State.
"Still without a few of our top runners, the women's team really stepped up," said head coach
Tony Nicolosi. "Kelsey and Sarah had unbelievable performance, a true testament of how hard they;ve been working."
Lamb placed 88th in the overall field and 16th among Division II runners to lead the Pioneers.
Sarah Perrin was close behind at 22:45.01, taking 103rd place overall and 23rd among DII athletes.
Newcomer
Megan Satterfield also ran a very strong race, placing 125th in 23:23.69.
Andrea Romero crossed the finish line in 25:05.90, and
Taryn Stevenson took 152nd in 25:32.76.
The Pioneer have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about their results so far. Just two meets into the season, this CSUEB squad is already producing some of the fastest times the program has seen since re-joining NCAA Division II in 2009.
In two weeks, the team is back in action in the Bay Area, competing in the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 1.
