Blowout & Comeback Victories Give Pioneers Sweep of CSULA

HAYWARD, Calif.--Cal State East Bay fought through steady rain most of Saturday and swept visiting Cal State L.A. in a doubleheader.
The first game was a 14-0 Pioneer blowout and the second game saw the home team score three times in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead and hold on to win by same score. The wins brings the Pioneers CCAA record to 11-11 with a 20-13 overall mark. The Golden Eagles drop to 6-15 in the conference and 7-25 overall.

GAME ONE: Cal State East Bay 14, Cal State L.A. 0

This game remained relatively close with the Pioneers leading 5-0 after 6 ½ innings, but in the bottom of the seventh the Pioneers sent 15 batters to the plate and erupted for eight runs to make it 13-0 before scoring their final run in the eighth to complete the 14-0 blowout of the Golden Eagles.

The Pioneers offense scored 13 more runs than they needed as starting pitcher, Alex Vesia, went seven innings and allowed no runs on two hits. Joshua Kubiske and Marcus Williams finished off the shutout in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

The Pioneers banged-out 15 hits, including three each from Marcus Wise, Michael Thomas, and Rudy Navarro. Wise and Thomas both had two RBI's to go along with their three hits. Navarro had one RBI. Troy Resch and Raymond Jones each went 2 for 4 with two RBI's.

GAME TWO: Cal State East Bay 6, Cal State L.A. 4

After cruising to victory in game one, the Pioneers had to fight from behind in game two.

When Thomas scored Wise on a sacrifice fly in the first inning it appeared the second game was going to be much like the first game, but not so. The Pioneers would go up 2-0 before the Golden Eagles plated four runs in the fifth inning to go up by two.

In the seventh inning, the Pioneers were aided by two Golden Eagle errors and a hit batter in the three run go-ahead inning.

With the bases loaded, Chris Porter hit a groundball to the second basemen that was misplayed and allowed Thomas to score from third to tie it at four.

Raymond Jones came up next with one out and hit a sharp ground ball to the first basemen who threw to second base to retire Porter, but an errant return throw from the shortstop to first in effort to complete the inning-ending double play was wide and got past the first basemen. Navarro easily scored on the play and Resch came all the way from second base to score and make it 6-4 Pioneers.

The relief efforts of Andrew Fernandez, Angel Lara, and Derek Oetken closed the door on any thoughts of a comeback by the Golden Eagles had of scoring more than four runs and East Bay won their third consecutive game.

Fernandez pitched two scoreless innings and picked up his second win of the season. Oetken got his CCAA-leading seventh save. Jacob Call got the start for the Pioneers and went five innings and allowed one earned run on eight hits.

Thomas had another two RBI's in the second game to make it four combined in both games. Wise went 2 for 4 in game two to make it 5 for 8 in the doubleheader.

Cal State East Bay concludes their three-game series with Cal State L.A. Sunday with first pitch at 11:00 A.M.
