SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.-- After losing a 2-1 pitcher's duel in game one of a doubleheader, Cal State East Bay made absolutely certain runs wouldn't be an issue in game two as they scored a season-high 21 runs in winning 21-5 over Cal State San Bernardino Saturday to split the doubleheader. After the split, the Pioneers stand 12-12 in the CCAA and 21-14 overall. The Coyotes are now 12-12 in conference and 17-19 overall.
GAME ONE: Cal State San Bernardino 2, Cal State East Bay 1
In what was expected to be a pitcher's duel between the Pioneers
Alex Vesia and the Coyotes Tyler Wells and it lived up to the billing.
The game only saw four hits until the Pioneers got on the board in the fifth inning when
Myles Babitt singled in
Chris Porter to make it 1-0 East Bay. Unfortunately, East Bay couldn't get a shutdown inning in the bottom of the fifth as the Coyotes plated two to take a 2-1 lead.
There wasn't much of any action as both pitchers were mowing-down the opposing batters in the sixth, seventh, and eight before an eventful ninth inning.
Kris Bartlett walked,
Zack Perugi singled, and
Rudy Navarro singled to load the bases with one out, but couldn't get the game tied as the Coyotes got a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Vesia pitched seven innings for the Pioneers and allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in getting the loss (3-4).
GAME TWO: Cal State East Bay 21, Cal State San Bernardino 5
The Pioneers got to work offensively in the first inning as they scored four times on RBI base hits by Navarro,
Troy Resch, and Porter.
Navarro would have the second of his four RBI's in the second when he doubled in
Daniel Goodrich to build the lead back to three. The Pioneers would blow the game open in the third with three to make it 8-2. They would add three in fifth, two in the seventh, and watch Resch hit his second home run of the season to make it 14-5 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
The Pioneers wouldn't relax on their eight-run lead and put an exclamation point on the win with seven in the ninth to surpass 20 runs. East Bay sent 13 batters to the plate and had six hits.
Brandon Acosta finished off the Coyotes in the ninth and the Pioneers now look to take the rubber-match of the three-game series Sunday.
Navarro's four RBI's came on a 3-6 effort at the plate and his average creeped up to .402.
Raymond Jones great April continued as he went 4 for 4 with two RBI's and is batting .613 this month. Goodrich joined Jones with four hits in seven at bats and also got two RBI's. The four hits and two RBI's were a season-high for Goodrich.
The 25 hits by the Pioneers was a conference-high this season, but not a school record. That was set on Feb. 19 when they got 26 in a 19-7 rout over Fresno Pacific.
Joshua Kubiske came in relief of starter,
Jacob Call, and picked up his third win (3-3) of the season going 3.2 innings and allowing an earned run on four hits.
The series finale commences at 11:00 A.M. Sunday from Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.Â
