Resch's Second Home Run of Weekend Powers Pioneers to Series Victory

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- After putting up 21 runs in their game two victory over Cal State San Bernardino Saturday, the Pioneers plated eight more and took the three-game series against the Coyotes 2-1 after winning Sunday 8-2.

Troy Resch hit his third home run of the season and second in consecutive days to highlight a 3 for 5 day with four RBI's. The Pioneers have won four out of their past five to improve their CCAA record to 13-12 and 22-14 overall. The Coyotes are now 12-13 in conference and 17-20 overall.

East Bay was able to get a 5-0 lead after three innings when they struck for one in the second and four in the third.

Resch singled to open the second, Chris Porter got down a sacrifice bunt to move Resch to second, and Zack Perugi doubled to score Resch and get the Pioneers on the board.

Rudy Navarro doubled in the third to score Marcus Wise and make it 2-0 before Resch's hit an opposite field home run to left field to bring home Navarro and Raymond Jones to bust the game open.

When the Coyotes scored two in the bottom of the sixth to reduce the Pioneers lead to three, East Bay would get the two back  in the seventh on RBI singles by Resch and Dakota Conners.

The Pioneers would add an unearned run in the eighth and cruise to a six-run victory in Southern California.

Navarro and Conners contributed three hits each in the Pioneers 15-hit attack. Perugi and Michael Frantz both had two hits.

The job the pitching staff did Sunday matched the output by the offense. Four relievers combined with starter Nick Sergi to make sure the Coyotes wouldn't entertain thoughts of a big comeback. Sergi pitched 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and earned his second win (2-1) of the season.

Donavon Ramirez, Angel Lara, Cole Compton, and Derek Oetken pitched the final 3.1 innings and held the Coyotes scoreless, while only allowing two hits.

The Pioneers will next play at San Francisco State Wednesday at 3:00 P.M. before hosting Cal State San Marcos in a three-game series at Pioneer Field starting Saturday.
