Pioneers Pick up 6-2 Win over SF State in Midweek Makeup Game

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team notched a big road win on Wednesday, defeating San Francisco State 6-2 in the third midweek makeup game of the season between the two teams.

The Pioneers and Gators were originally scheduled for a four-game series Mar. 12-14, but the weekend was rained out. With the win, East Bay improves to 23-14 for the season and 14-12 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, maintaining a slim hold on third place in the North Division and putting them just one game behind first place Chico State.

The CSUEB offense got things going early at Maloney Field against SF State starter Peter Reyes. Marcus Wise, Raymond Jones, and Rudy Navarro started the game with three straight singles to load the bases. Troy Resch then drove in a run with a ground out, and a two-out error by the pitcher made it 2-0 Pioneers before the Gators even got to bat.

The Pioneers tacked on two more the following inning to make it 4-0. Kris Bartlett reached on an infield single with one out and moved into scoring position on a throwing error, allowing Wise to knock him in with a single. Wise proceeded to steak second and advance to third on a wild pitch, allowing him to score easily on Jones's second hit in as many innings.

East Bay scored for the third straight inning thanks to Chris Porter, who walked and stole second, and Dakota Conners, who ripped a two-out single to center to make it 5-0

Two singles and a walk plated a run for SF State in the third inning, but that was the only damage the home team could do against Pioneer starter Jacob Call, who gave up six hits on 59 pitches in 4.0 innings and left with a 5-1 lead.

Andrew Fernandez came out of the bullpen for the fifth and gave CSUEB an outstanding effort in relief. The senior allowed a run on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts in 4.0 innings to record the victory.

The Pioneers added their sixth run in the sixth inning. Zach Perugi led off with a single, Conners bunted him to second, and Daniel Goodrich drove him in with an opposite field single.

East Bay closer Derek Oetken tossed a scoreless ninth inning to close out the win, as the Pioneers secured at least a split of the four-game series by winning two of the first three against SFSU.

Wise, Jones, and Navarro led the way offensively, finished with three hits each. As a team, the relentless Pioneer lineup tallied 14 hits and three walks, and they didn't strike out a single time.

The Pioneers and Gators will play their final makeup game Tuesday, May 3 at Pioneer Field. But first, East Bay returns home this weekend to host Cal State San Marcos for a three-game series, starting Saturday, Apr. 23 with a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
