HAYWARD, Calif. -- It was an eventful Tuesday at Pioneer Field as the Cal State Easy Bay baseball team picked up a pair of victories to split its four-game CCAA series with No. 22 Chico State.
The series was originally scheduled for Mar. 3-5. The Wildcats (23-9, 13-7 CCAA) won the opener, 10-7, and then the teams played through eight innings for rain in game two before the umpires suspended play.Â
Chico made the trip back down to Hayward today to complete the series, starting with the suspended game. The Pioneers led 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth when the game was stopped, so they needed just three out to secure a victory. Closer
Derek Oetken allowed a pair of base runners in the ninth inning, but escaped the jam to earn his sixth save and clinch a win for the Pioneers.Â
The teams then played a doubleheader to finish off their series. The first game was a back-and-forth slugfest, as neither squad used its weekend starters for the midweek contest. They combined for 28 runs and 39 hits, and when the dust settled, the Wildcats escaped with a victory. Chico scored four runs in the top of the ninth to break an 11-11 tie. The Pioneers answered back with two in the bottom of the frame, and they had the bases loaded when Steven Baker struck out
Chris Porter to end it.
Porter nonetheless had a monster game, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and a two-run homer that briefly gave East Bay the lead in the seventh. Junior
Raymond Jones notched his second straight four-hit game and drove in a pair of runs.Â
The final game of the series didn't get off to a good start for CSUEB, as the Wildcats jumped out to an 8-2 lead. But the Pioneers refused to quit, scoring three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. They went into the bottom of the last inning trailing 9-6 and staged yet another rally. East Bay scored three time to tie the game and send it to extras, highlighted by Jones's two-run opposite-field triple.Â
After
Donavon Ramirez pitched two scoreless innings in relief, the Pioneers had a chance to win it in the eighth.
Rudy Navarro singled and stole second, andf then with two outs,
Zack Perugi shot a single past the diving second baseman to bring Navarro home and snag the walk-off win.
Ramirez picked up his fourth win of the season, and Perugi finished 3-for-3 off the bench. Jones had two more hits and three RBI, giving him 10 hits in his last 13 at bats to raise his batting average all the way to .371.
The Pioneers are back in action this weekend when they host Cal State L.A. for a three-game series, starting Apr. 9 at 11 a.m.
