SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State East Bay fell behind 7-1 after four innings and couldn't stop the San Francisco State bats in a 14-3 loss Wednesday at Maloney Field.
The loss drops the Pioneers to 5-9 in the CCAA and 14-11 overall. The Gators improved to 7-8 in conference and 13-12 overall. The Gators even up the season series at 1-1 after the Pioneers won Wednesday, March 23 by a count of 7-5 in Hayward.
The game was close for the first 3 ½ innings with the score being 1-1 before the Gators broke out with six in the bottom of the fourth.
After the rough fourth inning the Pioneers did get one back when
Michael Thomas scored
Joey Dice with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2. But the Gators answered the Pioneers run with two of their own in the home half of the fifth. SF State would score five more times before
Rob Link singled in
Matt Cantelme to tally the third run for East Bay in the ninth.
Rudy Navarro went 2 for 4 to raise his CCAA-leading batting average to .438.
Chris Porter went 2 for 2 with a run. In addition to the RBI's by Thomas and Link,
Ryan Wheat had the RBI single in the third.
Donavon Ramirez took the loss (3-3) for the Pioneers.
Cal State East Bay heads to Southern California for the first time this season to square-off against Cal State Dominguez Hills in a three-game series starting Saturday with a doubleheader.
First pitch in game one is set for 11:00 A.M. Game two will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
