CARSON, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team opening its three-game series on the road at Cal State Dominguez Hills by splitting Saturday's doubleheader. The Pioneers rallied for a dramatic 8-4 win in the opener before falling short in the asfternoon contest by a final score of 3-2.
East Bay (15-12, 6-10 CCAA) got solid performances by their starting pitchers in both games.
Alex Vesia allowed three earned runs in 6.2 innings, but didn't get a decision when the Pioneers erased a 3-0 deficit in the seventh inning.
Derek Oetken got the win in relief after CSUEB hung five runs on the board in the top of the 9th to steal a win. Kriss Bartlett and
Myles Babitt both notched two hits and two RBI in the morning game.
Jacob Call was impressive in the nightcap, giving up just two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work. He was a tough-luck loser when the Torors scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie. The Pioneers loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but couldn't manage to plate the tying run, as CSUDH starter Tyray Gatewood picked up a complete game victory.
East Bay's only runs of the second game came on a two-run homer by
Troy Resch, his first as a Pioneer.
Rudy Navarro,
Michael Frantz, and
Raymond Jones all had two hits in the loss.
The series concludes on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game between the two teams, as the Pioneers look to stay in the hunt in the CCAA.
