HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team fell to a hot-shooting Cal State LA squad, 69-56, on the second night of 2016 Homecoming festivities. The Pioneers were led by
Patrick Marr's season-high 16 points on a night when the Golden Eagles dominated in the paint and shot 53.1 percent from the field.
With the loss, East Bay drops to 9-17 overall and 5-14 in conference play, while LA improved to 8-17 and 7-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAA).
One night after putting up 81 points in a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Pioneers couldn't get the shots to fall on Saturday, finshing at 24.5 percent from the field (13-for-53). The Golden Eagles also had an advantage on the glass, out-rebounding East Bay 43 to 31.
Jalen Richard also reached double figures for the Pioneers with 13 points, although the team's leading scorer was just 2-for-10 from the floor.
Alex Carmon tallied six points, six rebounds, and three steals, while
Ryan Okwudibonye posted five points and a team-high seven boards. However, the pair of seniors combined to shoot 2-for-16 from the floor.
Marr was the bright spot for the Pioneers offensively, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the first half to go along with five rebounds. The sophomore finished 4-for-7 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line.Â
Robert Garrett recorded a pair of blocks in 13 minutes, giving the seven-foot senior 25 blocks in 26 games for the season, which leads the team.Â
The loss to close out Homecoming Week officicially eliminates East Bay from postseason contention in the CCAA. The Pioneers now have a full week to prepare for their regular season finale on Feb. 27 against rival Cal State Monterey Bay. That 7:30 p.m. game will be preceded by the annual "Senior Night" ceremony to honor the four Pioneer seniors.
