HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball came up short against visiting Cal State Monterey Bay in the final game of the 2015-16 season, falling 75-65 to the Otters at Pioneer Gym.
The Pioneers finish the season 9-18 overall with a 5-15 mark in conference play. Prior to the game, the team held a brief ceremony to honorth four seniors on the this year's squad:
Robert Garrett,
Alex Carmon,
Ryan Okwudibonye, and
Jack Pasquini.
Carmon scored a season-high 20 points to lead the Pioneers on Senior Night, going 5-for-14 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line.
East Bay led for much of the first half, but the Otters made a late run to take a 31-30 lead into halftime. The Pioneers didn't hit enough shots to hang with Monterey in the second half, as the Otters pulled away late. CSUEB finished the night shooting 31 percent from the field, while the Otters hit at 52 percent.
"This was a game of two halves," said head coach
Gus Argenal. "In the first half, we guarded with and kept Monterey out of transition. In the second half, we came out slowly and did not have the same focus with out defensive matchups and rebounding. The credit goes to CSUMB for their urgency and ability to make big plays."
Okwudibonye and Pasquini both scored nine points in their final game wearing the red and black.
Jalen Richard notched six points and six boards, and
Jordan Balser scored nine off the bench.
"I love these seniors and appreciate their commitment to the program," Argenal added. "They have improved up in a lot of different areas, and I am confident we will make even greater strides next year. Thank you to the fans and the Pioneer community for their commitment and passion for East Bay basketball."
