East Bay Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader on Late-Inning Rallies

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team's season-opening winning streak ended at four on Saturday as the Pioneers dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against Western Oregon.

The Wolves picked up victories by final scores of 8-1 and 5-2 to take a 2-to-1 lead in the four-game non-conference series at Pioneer Field.

The Pioneer bats were relatively quiet on a warm, sunny day in the Hayward hills. East Bay's starting pitching was strong in both contests, but WOU managed late-inning scoring rallies both times.

Game 1 -- WOU 8, CSUEB 1

The Wolves got on the board right away with a run in the first inning against East Bay starter Jacob Call. But the Pioneers answered right back, as Rudy Navarro laced a single into left field to bring home Kris Bartlett.

Call settled down after that, as did WOU hurler Garrett Alvarez. Both right-handers hung five straight zeroes on the board, and the teams headed to the seventh tied 1-1.

Call was reliever after six strong frames. He scattered three hits and allowed just the one run, taking advantage of two big double plays.

Andrew Fernandez, Friday's winner in relief, came in to start the seventh and got himself into some trouble. A walk and a hit batter put two on with one out, then a triple to right field and a double to right-center made it 4-1 Wolves.

Western Oregon tacked on four more runs in the eighth and ninth innings against Sean Patton and Cole Compton. Alvarez closed out a complete game five-hitter as WOU evened up the series. He struck out six and didn't issue a walk.

Myles Babitt was the only Pioneer with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4.

Game 2 - WOU 5, CSUEB 2

The afternoon contest followed a similar script as the morning one. An eventful first inning saw WOU plate a run on three hits against Donavon Ramirez. But the Pioneers answered right back, as Navarro hooked a double just inside third base to bring home Michael Thomas, then Joey Dice gave CSUEB a 2-1 lead with an RBI groundout.

Ramirez and WOU left-hander Darrien Moran both settled down after the first and were effective over the next four innings.
Thanks to some outstanding defense on both sides, East Bay still led 2-1 heading into the sixth inning of a scheduled seven-inning game. Ramirez issued back-to-back walks with one out, and then Cody Sullivan hit a three-run homer into the trees in left field, and just like that WOU led 4-2.

Justin Wakem added a solo blast in the seventh, and the Pioneers didn't threaten against WOU closer Elias Bedolla, a Fremont, Calif. product.

Junior newcomer Nick Sergi tossed the last 1.2 innings for East Bay in relief. Navarro went 2-for-4, giving him three of CSUEB's 11 hits in the doubleheader and two of the team's three RBI.

The Pioneers will come back out Sunday morning for a Valentine's Day date with the Wolves and attempt to earn a series split. Brandon Acosta is expected to start on the hill with first pitch at 11 a.m.
