HAYWARD, Calif. -- After losing a 6-4 lead in the top of ninth,
Daniel Goodrich doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth and later scored the winning run on a
Ryan Wheat sacrifice fly to give the Pioneers a 7-6 walk-off win Sunday.
The victory gives the Pioneers a four-game split in the series against GNAC foe Western Oregon and improves their record to 5-2. Western Oregon falls to 5-4.
The Pioneers came out swinging in the first inning when they plated two runs.
Myles Babitt doubled in
Michael Thomas to make it 1-0 and
Dakota Conners singled to center to score
Rudy Navarro to make it 2-0.
After the Wolves Cody Sullivan homered in the second to cut the lead to 2-1, Navarro got the run back in the bottom of the second with an RBI single and a 3-1 Pioneer lead.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, and the Wolves showed that when they took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. Wheat would tie the game for CSUEB with an RBI single in the fifth.
The most exciting play of the day would come in the bottom of the seventh. The Pioneers had
Joey Dice on third and
Chris Porter on second and third with one out.
Marcus Wise laid down a great bunt to the first baseman who threw out Wise on the play. The heads-up base running by Dice at third allowed him to score to break the 4-4 tie, but the play wasn't over. Porter wasn't content just advancing to third and made a mad dash to home and just beat the throw from first base to give the Pioneers a two-run lead.
The Wolves would once again fight back and tie it again in the ninth, but this was going to be the Pioneers day.
Goodrich took a 1-0 pitch and hit a double off the wall to put the game-winning run at second base. Porter came up next and advanced Goodrich to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Wheat took care of the rest with a fly ball to left to score Goodrich and the celebration began for CSUEB.
Wise and Wheat both had two RBI's in the game to lead the Pioneers offensive attack.
Navarro went 3 for 5.
Derek Oetken got his first win (1-0) of the year out of the bullpen for the Pioneers.
Cal State East Bay will stay home next weekend when Fresno Pacific comes to town for a four-game series. The first game will take place Thursday at 2:00 P.M.Â
