Pioneers Place 18th among Nation's Elite at NCAA Preview

AURORA, Colo.
-- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team moved up one spot on Tuesday to place 18th at the NCAA Division II Championship Preview tournament, hosted by Metro State at the par-72 Commonground Golf Course. 

The Pioneers followed up their 328 on Monday with a 331 (+43) in this morning's final round to finish the week at 659 (+83). They bested both Colorado Christian (+85) and Colorado Springs (+98). Tarleton State captured the team championship at +12, followed by Dallas Baptist (+19) and Augustana College (+20). 

Senior Melissa Hosman led East Bay on Tuesday, carving nine strokes off her first round score. The Castro Valley native shot 78 (+6), highlighted by a birdie and a team-high 11 pars. She finished the tournament tied for 74th in the overall field of 100 golfers with a total of 165 (+21).

Lulu Huang stumbled a bit with an 86 (+14) in the second round, but still finished with the team's lowest two-round score. The sophomore totaled 163 (+19), tied for 65th individually.

Sophomore Taylor Wyss matched Huang's 86 (+14) on Tuesday and matched Hosman's total score of 165 (+21) for the tournament. Fellow second-year player Sienna Starck was right on her heels at 166 (+22) in 77th place. Starck turned in CSUEB's second-best card of the day with an 81 (+9).

Newcomer Kelsi Valenzuela wrapped up her first event as a Pioneer with a 92 (+20) in the second round to finish in 96th place at 180 (+36). 

Next week, the Pioneer women travel to St. George, Utah to compete in the Dixie State Invitational at Sand Hallow Resort on Oct. 5-6.
