East Bay Completes Four-Game Sweep with Walk-off Win

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team scored two runs in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth to erase a three-run deficit on Sunday and walk off with a 7-6 victory over Cal State San Bernardino to sweep the four-game series.

After Marcus Williams tied the game with an RBI single to left, Myles Babitt lifted a sacrifice fly to center with one out in the ninth to send the Pioneers home with a victory.

Both teams totaled 11 hits in a game that was back and forth from the first inning. The Coyotes got on the board when Warren Fishback hit a two-run homer to left in the opening frame.

Pioneer starter Jacob Call settled down after that, holding San Bernardino scoreless over the next three innings to allow the Pioneers to come back. In the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Kochan singled with one out, and Rudy Navarro drew a walk. Jason Fletcher knocked in East Bay's first run with a single, and then came around to tie the score 2-2 on a wild pitch.

The visitors answered right back, however. Three hits and a sacrifice fly led to a pair of runs for CSUSB. They scored again in the sixth on a single, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch, and a sac fly to take a 5-2 lead.

The Pioneers got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Navarro belted a solo home run to left-center, his third round-tripper of the season. But the Coyotes came right back with a run in the seventh. Grant Buchanan hit a two-out RBI single through the left side to put San Bernardino back up by three.

Call came out after 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with no walks. Cole Compton followed him out of the bullpen and was charged with a pair of runs in 2.2 innings of relief.

After Donavon Ramirez started the eighth inning, Angel Lara came in with one out and two runners on base. The left-hander proceeded to strike out the next two hitters to escape the jam.

In the bottom of the eighth, Fletcher led off with a single. He was still at first base two batters later with two outs, but then Chris Porter launched a ball into the top of the trees beyond left field. Porter's team-leading fourth home run of the season brought the Pioneers within one run at 6-5.

Lara worked a scoreless top of the ninth inning and ended up earning his first victory of the year with 1.2 innings of relief.

Kochan led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk. After Navarro flied out, Fletcher also worked a base on balls to move the tying run into scoring position. Williams then shot a single through the left side to bring home Kochan and make it 6-6. Pinch-runner Devin Higgins moved up to third base on a ball in the dirt, and then he beat the center fielder's throw to home on Babitt's game-winning sac fly.

Fletcher had a monster game in the finale, going 4-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Williams went 2-for-5, and Navarro was on base twice and scored both times.

Kochan finished 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, and two runs scored to continue his hot streak. The Pioneer third baseman racked up 11 hits and eight RBI in the series, batting .647 in the four games.

The Pioneers have now won seven of their last nine games to improve to 14-25 overall and 11-21 in league play. They take a tough road trip to Chico State next weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. game on Friday, Apr. 24.
