POMONA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team has now won three of its last four games after hanging on for a 3-1 win over No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona in the second game of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader.
The Broncos won the morning game at Scolinos Field, 9-2, to split the twinbill. Heading into Sunday's finale, the Pioneers lead the series two games to one after picking up their third road victory of the year.
Game 1 - CPP 9, CSUEB 2The home team never trailed in the first contest, although East Bay starter
Jacob Phillips kept the Pioneers in the game early. Pomona scored an unearned run in the second and doubled its lead in the fourth, but CSUEB answered back with a run in the fifth on a double by
Marcus Williams and an RBI ground out by
Wyatt Foreman.
The visitors trailed just 2-1 going into the sixth inning, but that's when the Broncos did their damage, scoring six times to put the game away. They racked up six hits in the frame, capped off by a two-run single by Christian Kelley and a two-run double by Kyle Garlick.
Jason Fletcher belted a solo home run in the seventh -- his third of the season -- but East Bay mounted no further rallies as CPP closed out the 9-2 victory.
Williams led East Bay offensively with a three-hit performance, and
Marcus Wise went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot.
Phillips was charged with five earned runs in 5.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout, taking the loss to drop his record to 0-3. Freshman
Donavon Ramirez finished off the sixth inning, giving up a pair of runs.
Cole Compton tossed the final two frames for the Pioneers and allowed a run on three hits. Pomona's Max Bethell (5-2) pitched 6.1 innings to earn the win.
Game 2 - CSUEB 3, CPP 1Saturday's seven-inning nightcap featured an outstanding pitching match-up between CSUEB freshman
Alex Vesia and Pomona's Cody Ponce.
After they traded zeroes for a couple innings, the East Bay offense struck in the top of the third. Wise and
Ryan Wheat got things started with one-out singles, and then
Rudy Navarro found a hole through the right side to knock in the game's first run. Fletcher executed a squeeze bunt to bring home Wheat and move Navarro up to second base, then
Kelly Starnes plated the third Pioneer run with an opposite-field single.
That was the only scoring rally East Bay managed against Ponce, who entered the game with a 0.89 ERA, but it turned out to be enough to secure a victory.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos got on the board with a double by Garlick and a two-out single by Michael Zidek, but Vesia retired the next hitter to preserve the 3-1 lead.
The left-hander scattered seven hits and didn't walk a batter in six innings of work. He recorded one strikeout and exited after 105 pitches, handing the ball over to senior
Julian Garcia with two runners on base in the last inning.
Garcia retired all three hitters he faced to close out the victory and earn his second save of the season. Vesia got the win to improve to 3-4, while lowering his ERA to a team-best 2.17.
The Pioneers totaled nine hits against Ponce, an impressive output. Seven different players had a hit, led by Navarro and
Myles Babitt, who each went 2-for-3.
East Bay will look to capture the series against the top-ranked team in the West Region on Sunday, Apr. 12. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
