Pioneers Earn Series Split with #18 Broncos after 8-1 Loss

POMONA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team came up short in the finale of its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series at Cal Poly Pomona, losing 8-1 on Sunday to the 18-th-ranked Broncos.

The Pioneers (10-25, 7-21 CCAA) split the series with Pomona (27-11, 19-9 CCAA, capturing their second and third road victories of the season, an impressive feat against a team that entered the weekend tied for first place in the league with just nine losses on the year.

The Bronco bats broke out in Sunday's contest after being held to just one run in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. They struck quickly in the first inning against CSUEB freshman Jacob Call, as Nick Cooksey doubled and Michael Zidek singled to make it 1-0.

The Pioneers briefly tied the game in the top of the third when Dakota Conners led off with a single. After two outs, Rudy Navarro singled to left and Jason Fletcher was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kelly Starnes then flied out to right, but not before East Bay picked up its lone run of the game on a passed ball.

Pomona answered right back, however, scoring twice in the third, three times in the fourth, and twice more in the fifth to pull away from the Pioneers. CPP racked up 12 total hits and took advantage of four East Bay errors.

Call took the loss and was charged with six runs on eight hits in four innings. Senior Justin Harr pitched three innings of relief without allowed an earned run, giving up three hits and striking out two. Junior Cole Compton came out of the bullpen and tossed a scoreless eighth inning to finish off the game.

Navarro went 2-for-4 to lead the way offensively for the Pioneers, who totaled six hits and drew zero walks against Pomona starter Ryan Olson. Fletcher, Conners, Marcus Williams, and Myles Babitt tallied one knock each.

East Bay returns home next week to continue its conference schedule with a four game series against Cal State San Bernardino, starting Friday Apr. 17 at 3 p.m.
