SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team dropped both ends of its Saturday doubleheader to San Francisco State on a gorgeous day in the city. The Pioneers (4-11, 1-10 CCAA) scored just two total runs on the day, losing by final scores of 3-1 and 8-1.
The Gators (7-10, 6-5 CCAA) have taken the first three games of the California Collegiate Athletic Association series, clinching a season victory over East Bay for the first time in four seasons.
Game 1 - SF State 3, CSUEB 1The Pioneers jumped on the board in the first inning to grab a lead in the morning game.
Myles Babitt hooked a double into the right-field corner, and then
Daniel Carney sliced a two-out single to right to make it 1-0 Pioneers.
Freshman
Jacob Call took the hill for East Bay and turned in a strong performance. He threw five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits before getting into trouble in the sixth.
The home team opened the sixth inning with four straights hits and ended up scoring three times before reliever
Angel Lara escaped the jam. The left-hander pitched the final 2.2 frames for CSUEB.
The 3-1 score held up as SFSU starter Ryan Bohnet gave up just four hits in eight innings before handing the ball over to closer Cory Davis for the ninth.
Babitt was on base twice, drawing the only walk of the game for the Pioneers to go along with his double. Middle infielders
Marcus Williams and
Dakota Conners each finished 1-for-3.
Game 2 - SF State 8, CSUEB 1Right-hander
Justin Harr went up against SFSU starting pitcher Peter Reyes in Saturday's nightcap. Once again, Cal State East Bay struck first against the Gators, scoring a run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Michael Frantz picked up his first hit as a Pioneer with a one-out single, and then Babitt executed a hit-and-run by shooting a single past the diving third baseman.
Ryan Kochan followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to knock the run in.
Unfortunately, that was the only scoring of the afternoon for East Bay, which totaled just six hits in the game. The Gators, meanwhile, scored four times in the bottom of the third to take the lead. They added three more runs in the fifth to break the game open.
Harr lasted 2.2 innings before handing the ball over to side-winder
Andrew Fernandez for an inning and two-thirds. Fellow freshman
Donavon Ramirez made his collegiate debut to close out the game for the Pioneers and looked impressive, allowing no runs and striking out one in 1.2 innings.
Babitt had a big day at the dish, going 3-for-4 in the second game to finish the day with a team-high four hits. Frantz went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and turned in some nifty defense at shortstop. Williams notched the only other hit of the game for the visitors.
The Pioneers will attempt the salvage the final game of the series when they return home for a 12 p.m. game in Hayward on Sunday, Mar. 8.
