HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team was shut out on Sunday by Cal State L.A. left-hander Bryan Conant in the finale of the four-game series between the two squads. With the 3-0 victory, the Golden Eagles (19-9, 14-6 CCAA) completed the weekend sweep.
The Pioneers (7-20, 4-16 CCAA) had just four hits on the day and batted .181 as a team for the series, failing to score a run over the last 24 innings against an outstanding CSULA pitching staff.
Sunday's contest was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings between Conant and East Bay freshman
Jacob Call. It was scoreless into the sixth inning when singles by Jesus Cuevas and Trevor Meleski and a double by Dakota Hernandez plated two runs for the visitors.
CSULA tacked on an unearned run in the seventh before Call exited after 106 pitches. He turned in another impressive outing, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
Junior
Cole Compton tossed the final two frames for the Pioneers without allowing a hit. The right-hander has now posted four straight scoreless appearances out of the bullpen.
East Bay's best scoring chances came in the first two innings.
Marcus Williams and
Ryan Kochan both hit singles in the first, but both were picked off by Conant attempting to steal. In the second,
Rudy Navarro belted a ground-rule double to centerfield to lead things off.
Jason Fletcher then sacrificed him to third, but the Pioneers weren't able to knock the run in.
After that, Conant gave up one hit over the final seven innings -- a single to left field by
Devin Higgins -- and needed just 101 pitches to complete the shutout.
Navarro was the only Pioneer to reach base twice, going 1-for-2 with a walk. He was the lone bright spot offensively for East Bay in the series, batting .538 with seven hits and three doubles in the four games.Â
Next up, the Pioneers hit the road for eight straight games, starting with a four-game series next weekend at Sonoma State. The opener is scheduled for Thursday, Apr. 2 at 2 p.m.
