ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- In a game that lasted just one hour and 40 minutes, the Cal State East Bay baseball team dropped the opener of its series at Sonoma State by a final score of 3-0.
The visiting Pioneers (7-21, 4-17 CCAA) were out-hit eight to five by the Seawolves (18-16, 12-13 CCAA) as SSU starter Haydon Turpin out-dueled East Bay's
Michael Pope.
Pope was excellent over eight innings as he notched his first complete game of the season. The senior right-hander gave up one earned run on eight hits and issued just one walk, but he suffered the loss to drop his record to 1-4.
Sonoma State grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of unearned runs. Jordan Weiks doubled with two outs, then scored on an infield error by the Pioneers. Two batters later, Cody Morris knocked in another run with a single.Â
The Seawolves tacked on an insurance run in the eighth, which was more than enough support for Turpin. He allowed just four hits over seven scoreless innings before handing the ball over to Gerald Jamerson, who pitched the final two frames to earn the save.
Ryan Kochan,
Devin Higgins,
Rudy Navarro,
David Elzig, and
Ryan Wheat all finished with one hit for the Pioneers, who lost their eighth straight contest.
The four-game series continues on Friday with a doubleheader scheduled for 11 a.m. from Seawolf Diamond.
