HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team rallied for five runs in its final two at bats to secure a 5-2 victory over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills in the second game of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader.
The Toros (13-10, 8-7 CCAA) secured a 3-1 win over the Pioneers (6-13, 3-12 CCAA) in the first contest on one of the hottest days of the 2015 season thus far. East Bay has won two of the first three games against CSUDH heading into Sunday's finale, as the squad looks to capture its first series victory in league play.
Game 1 - CSUDH 3, CSUEB 1The first game of the day was well pitched on both sides. Freshman right-hander
Jacob Call gave the Pioneers a strong outing, holding Dominguez scoreless through the first three frames. He ran into trouble in the third when Kamran Young, who entered the series as the CCAA's leading hitter, lifted a solo home run to right field. The Toros got three more hits in the inning to push across a second run before Call escaped the jam.
The Fremont native came out of the game after allowing just two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings, but the Pioneer bats weren't able to take him off the hook. East Bay scored its only run of the contest against Toro starter Winston Lavandier in the sixth inning when
Marcus Williams drove in
Jason Fletcher with a single to center.
The visitors tacked on another run in the eighth against the CSUEB bullpen, and Toro closer TyRay Gatewood tossed 2.2 scoreless innings to pick up the save and secure the 3-1 victory.
Marcus Wise went 2-for-5 with a stolen base for the Pioneers out of the leadoff spot, and Williams,
Ryan Kochan,
Rudy Navarro,
Daniel Carney, and
Wyatt Foreman posted one hit apiece. Fletcher drew three walks in the game.
Game 2 - CSUEB 5, CSUDH 2Dominguez Hills looked to be headed for a doubleheader sweep in the early going of the nightcap, which was scheduled for seven innings. They scored a run in the second inning against East Bay starters
Justin Harr, then added another in the fourth on an opposite-field home run by Young.
The Pioneers, meanwhile, didn't get their first base runner against Toro starter Kevin Brown until Kochan yanked a double down the left field line with two outs in the fourth inning.
East Bay still trailed 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when they finally mounted a rally, taking advantage of some wildness by Brown.
Dakota Conners worked a two-out walk, then
Chris Porter was hit by a pitch.
Devin Higgins knocked in CSUEB's first run with a line drive single to right. After Wise worked a walk to load the bases,
Myles Babitt drew another base on balls to tie the game and chase Brown from the game. Kochan then came up with the big hit of the game against reliever Bryce Shea, chopping a single up the middle to plate two runs and give East Bay a 4-2 lead. The senior third baseman finished 2-for-3 in game two.
The Pioneers added an insurance run in the sixth when Williams singled up the middle and stole second, then Porter hooked a two-out double into the left field corner to make it 5-2.
Harr allowed two runs on four hits in five innings to pick his second victory of the season. Left-hander
Angel Lara came in to escape a jam in the sixth and worked two perfect frames to earn his second save of the series.
The fourth and final game between East Bay and Dominguez Hills is set for Sunday, Mar. 15 at 11 a.m. Freshman southpaw
Alex Vesia is expected to take the ball for the Pioneers.
