AUSTIN, Texas -- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team finished in sixth place out of 12 teams at this week's Saint Edward's Invitational. The Pioneers shot 322 (+42) in the second round at the par-70 Onion Creek Golf Club, a 10-stroke improvement off their round one total.
After the teams played the first round on Sunday and took Monday off due to weather, the tournament concluded on Tuesday with temperatures in the 30s and winds up to 20 mph. CSUEB posted a total score of 654 (+94) for the event, besting six other squads. University of Indianapolis claimed the team championship at +46.
Freshman
Lulu Huang turned in the best performance of her young career, firing her two lowest collegiate rounds this week and notching her first top-20 finish. She shot 79 (+9) on Tuesday to finish tied for 18th place at 159 (+19).Â
Senior
Linda Brown and sophomore
Melissa Hosman ended up with identical totals of 162 (+22), tied for 27th place in the overall field of 64 golfers. Brown carded 82 (+12) in the second round, while Hosman fired East Bay's low round of the day with a 78 (+8). The Castro Valley native carved six strokes off her score from Sunday to Tuesday.Â
The fourth team score of the day came from freshman
Taylor Wyss, who improved eight strokes from the first round to the second. Her 83 (+13) today placed her in a tie for 43rd individually at 174 (+34).Â
Junior
Taelor Shweiki carded 85 (+15) to round out East Bay's second round performance, finishing just ahead of Wyss for the tournament at 173 (+33) in 41st place.
Following a strong performance in difficult conditions, the Pioneer women return to California next week to host the fourth annual Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. The tournament starts on Monday, Mar. 2 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, Calif.
